• (49-1) Pamela is jealous of the time and affection Jamie shows Nelson, and Belinda, well that's jealousy of another sort. Pamela may not be able to have Jamie in an intimate sense, without destroying her marriage, but she doesn't like anyone else having him either! These emotions are totally reasonable considering their history and how they feel about one another, just not very fair because she has made a choice and should not be in the way of Jamie keeping his options open. (49-2) Pamela would know exactly what Jamie needed under these circumstances without Jamie telling her. She understands the risks he's taking and would do anything to safeguard his well-being. They have a closeness which has not been taken to a physical level, but know each other's needs, wants, ideals. Words usually aren't necessary between them, it's already understood. • Q1. I think Pamela's jealousy is pretty natural. She has loved Jamie in the past, and been the object of his love, she still loves him and admits later it's irrational and selfish etc, but nevertheless I don't think it's surprising in the least. Wouldn't you all be jealous if you had her relationship with Jamie and had to watch another woman with him? • I'd like to think that if Jamie found a really great woman and he was actually in love with her that Pamela would not be jealous. I'd like to think Pamela is jealous mainly because Belinda isn't really right for Jamie. We know Maggie doesn't like her and we also know Maggie would want Jamie to be happy so I took that as a big red flag. But honestly, I don't think Pamela played fair in this case.   • She would definitely be happy if he found the right woman- she does want him to be happy, she does love him and wants that for him. But once Pamela came home, Jamie understood what he had with Belinda wasn't going to be a longterm thing. Only because the way he feels toward Pamela makes it clear to him that he doesn't truly love Belinda, at least not in a way that's enough for her, or, he feels, fair to her. • I know Pamela makes people mad- but maybe it'll help if I tell you she's a very opaque character, so her underlying motives etc run pretty deep, so I don't always agree with her either, but I do enjoy her all the same. Sometimes there are female characters in other books that I want to scream at- I don't often have the same reaction to male characters. So I wonder if we cut females less slack than we do the males?   • It's not that Pamela makes me mad and I apologize if it came across that way. I just don't understand sometimes...but I do enjoy her and like her. Maybe because we are females ourselves and sometimes our experiences play a huge role in how see things, we do tend to judge female characters harsher than males.       • I didn't think you were dissing her woman, just I know the girl stirs some strong emotions with readers, and it sorta depends which man you prefer just why one is mad at her, you know? I just see her through different lenses, I guess. :) I do understand it though, there's times when I think 'oh would you just shutup for heaven's sake!' when I am reading books.   • I think as the reader we have the benefit of not existing in the situations we are reading about. We have the ability to separate, ruminate and come up with our solution. The characters are living in the moment, so to speak, so at times its frustrating to see them do things we thing are wrong. I get frustrated with Pamela, but I think its because she's a risk taker and I am not. Thus most things she does make me nervous for her - I want to yell at her sometimes! *g* But she's definitely a person who keeps the story going and for that we have to love her... • Ok, I didn't like Belinda any better than Pamela did. We didn't see her much, but everytime we did, she was so ,,,,,, so,,,,,,, um... posessive,,, maybe that is the word I am searching for. Like when she asked Jamie, "are we going to race (the horse)", I mean she was not married to him,,, and had no right to claim his stuff, or any say in his things.
