• Chapter 51-- When I read I always expect that the main character will be stronger than the rest, perhaps a bit wiser,, or at least willing to think and make decisions, and be able to shield the rest of the characters. -- bug, 07:28:43 10/03/07 Wed

• 51.1) I think I have to say C. I do believe in a higher power, but I’d like to believe it is more forgiving of us than we are of ourselves. I also like to believe He/She is not as judgemental and damning as some organized religions would have us believe. Karma, yes, obviously our choices make our past and determine our present and future..we have free will to change our course and therefore create different circumstances for ourselves. And finally we have a conscience – sometimes we listen to it, sometimes we don’t. If we choose to do something we feel or our beliefs tell us is wrong, that conscience can haunt us and though we can’t go back and change what’s already done, we can learn to make peace with it and ease our conscience somewhat. Doesn’t mean we all of a sudden feel what we’ve done was right or good, but to be able to move on in a positive way, we have to somehow forgive ourselves. (NT) -- Marilyn, 08:26:48 10/03/07 Wed

  • I can see both here...but I really thought of Jesus. I connected it with that picture you see of Him on the front of children's bibles - the birds, the deer, the sheep all surrounding Him. • Chapt. 51 I don't think karma is simple and straightforward, as in if you do X, then Y (whether it's good or bad karma). For those who believe in karma it's more to do with their next life, rather than instant retribution in this one. Whether you believe in an afterlife or reincarnation or "instant karma" as John Lennon called it, I do think there is something to the idea -- if you are an immoral, evil person it will come back to you in the end. • Chapt. 52 Q. 1) For me it was a physical manifestation of the psychological difference that had started with Pamela's involvement with Love and continued to grow wider with Casey's incarceration. Q2) I think Casey did it hoping to scare Pamela away, if it was my husband I would have been more determined than ever to come and see him. I do think he felt it was the only way he could really get Pamela to understand just how brutal it was on the ship. 3) Her visit reminded him of his inability to help Pamela in any way and Casey is not a man who suffers an inability to act or take care of those he loves lightly. • (52-2)Casey needed to take such a drastic step and display his badly beaten back to get through to stubborn Pamela that certain actions had very negative consequences. If Pamela associated the beating with her visit then I don't know how she could continue to see him. Unlike Carla, I wouldn't visit my DH, as much as it might ease my own mind, if I thought he suffered further punishment for it. (52-3) I don't think the deciding factor to escape was so much Pamela's visit but that he expected to be transferred to another prison where lock-up would probably be counted in years, not months. That is too much to take. He can't leave Pamela alone for that long. Pamela is in Ireland (and the continual political strife) because of him, and he can't protect her while imprisoned. Even her protection might not be his major worry, he knows Jamie will take care of Pamela and Lawrence, but after years of his absence and Jamie's stalwart presence, Casey fears he may lose Pamela.   • I don't believe Pamela thought the marks on Casey's back were connected to her visit, but something that had been done to him for other reasons. If I knew my visit meant my husband would be beaten, no I wouldn't go. If I knew he was being beaten/tortured, then I'd want to go and see him to be sure he was still alive. • 52.2) I think it was effective in bringing Pamela closer to what reality was for him. I don't know that it was really effective in keeping her away. I can see her outrage over his situation making her do something drastic, as she did in Boston, to save him. 52.3) I think the major factor here was he realized this was his last best chance at making a succesful escape. But I also think he sensed Pamela's unwillingness to stay away and let it play out - maybe he's afraid she'll keep pushing and though he trusts Jamie to keep her safe, he also knows how stubborn she is, does she really understand the way this little war is played - who to trust who not to..if anyone? • 51.1- well this is Pamela's Catholic conscience trying to make sense of things. Could be my Mormon background coming back to haunt me on the page as well. Guilt featured largely for me growing up. 51.2. If you remember back at the beginning of EU, Jamie's birth caused all kinds of odd things to happen with animals and plants. Yes, he's a special boyo, some people just are, you know? Actually my DH is a little like this, animals and children adore him and know instinctively they can trust him. It's the strays that hunt me out though, I swear I have sucker written on my forehead and dogs and cats and wounded newts have the vision to see it.
