Subject: 38-2) If Casey had caved, the sergeant would then always have the upper hand, would have nothing to fear from these men, and could punish them in whatever horrid fashion he devised. But if Casey (and by extension, all of the prisoners, because from this point forward they'd look to Casey as their leader) stood firm, the sergeant could never completely rest easily, his superiority might be intact, but the balance might be more precarious than assured. In the back of his mind there would always be the possibility that the prisoners could revolt on-board and possibly take control. If the prisoners were able to suspend communications from the ship, there might never even be a plea for British army reinforcements. (who'd be slow to arrive in any event, just given the logistics).
In reply to: Carla 's message, "Chapter 37: Zorba and Company Despite the deadly serious nature of his task, I found myself smiling at the image of Jamie as "Zorba, The Greek" in this chapter. Then I had a vision of Jamie in his get-up and Casey as the priest pulling off some scheme together and laughed out loud. Now, on to the questions." on 08:39:50 09/24/07 Mon
