I may be opening up a can of worms, but it appears these boards have a lot of “chair judges,” former queens, and delegates commenting. I know there’s a stigma hovering over my head since I’m from North Dakota, but I’m going to give it my best shot and thought I’d ask for advice from you “unofficial experts.” I am new to the pageant scene and am wondering what is the best piece of advice you could give someone competing in their first pageant? Thanks for your time! ~Tera

Maybe “stigma” is too strong a word. It was what came to mind after reading some of the comments. There was some mention of ND not doing well because they never do well, I am expected to get last, etc. I apologize if “stigma” offended you or anyone else. It just appears that some states are “pegged” to have stronger delegates than others for obvious reasons (larger population, women/girls more active in pageants, etc.). North Dakota’s a great state and I am proud to represent them at Mrs. America. My director is doing a great job preparing me for Mrs. America. I just thought this board would be a good place to get even more advice. Knowledge is power:)

[> Subject: I have been a fan of yours since you won. I think you are just lovely. I agree with the comment about having a rock star hair and makeup artist. That, and a good gown that's not to harsh of a color...I'm hoping you'll bring a gold, or ivory colored gown with your hair and skin tone. Just be confident and FORGET what these negative Nancys say on here. If you need advice, turn to a good pageant coach whose been through the system. Holly Ernst is from Minnesota and she'd be a good coach or Michelle Kant-Strom in Nebraska. Best of luck, I think you're going to surprise a few folks!!!!!

[> Subject: Thanks for asking. My answer is: hire a pageant coach for bio, wardrobe and on-stage answer/presence. Secondly, during interview BE YOURSELF! Don't answer questions the way you THINK the judges want...answer from your HEART! Let them see who you really are. and have a lot of bling for evening wear. Lastly, SMILE, SMILE, SMILE, SMILE, SMILE AND SMILE!!!!

[> [> Subject: I think the 1st thing you need to do is not to take TOO MUCH advice. Don't forget, you won so you definately aren't a lost cause by any means. You clearly are very pretty. I would hire someone for hair and makeup and maybe get some extensions. I trust your paperwork is complete by now so just focus on being you. Work out and mentally prepare. Mrs America is not known as a platform pageant so although you need a good interview, the most important thing is the 1st impression. Stand up and stand out and get the question out of your head. You can be Mrs America!!!!! I would also suggest backing away from the boards. They can be toxic and everyone has their favorites. Some are hyped too much and make the infamous top 5 list and some fly under the radar. Either way, it gets too you. Have fun...YOU ARE GOING TO MRS AMERICA!!!!

[> Subject: Hair and make-up is only a small area of importance when you already have a strong presence, I would focus on making sure you have a STRONG interview, strong stage presence, a great confidence - Truly, the rest will come when you have all that!
