A while back I raised the same question with Phil Racicot, Duquesne Associate AD/Administration, and responsible for arranging the Dukes' football schedule. Here's what Phil e-mailed me:

"As for [Monmouth] joining the MAAC it makes sense for them, and these days that is all that matters. From a basketball standpoint the MAAC is typically better, typically the conference RPI is in the middle third (17-20) whereas the NEC is normally bottom third (24-27). Overall the MAAC can offer a better media deal, a neutral site championship and other events (Disney/ESPN etc.), branding/identity upgrades can come with new in-market rivalries by adding both Monmouth and Quinnipiac. Across the board the MAAC is better in the Olympic sports as well (especially an emphasis on lacrosse)."
