This is kind of a "chicken and egg" thing here. The NEC will get a higher caliber kid when the conference is seen as equal to the other "scholarship" conferences. The Dukes have to continue to play well againd teams like Bucknell to earn a spot. Their best chance to make the field was the year they lost to Albany in the frozen slop and wind. They would have won that game if they had Josh Rue that year. Albany had a similar back we had no match for given the game situations. 12-0 that year would have stood out better than San Diago's and Dayton's best.
NEC should have an auto-bid to be fair to all. An auto-bid will attract better players. What else do they have to do?

The Sports Network has another column arguing for a 24 team field by 2010. It makes sense to allow all conferences that play by the same rules to compete. By what ethics can the NCAA give not give auto-bids to conferences that allow scholarships and play by the same rules as all. As Doug points out- it will only give the entire FCS more of a fan base and show the BCS Division how to do it right!
