As a result of the NCAA Board of Directors approval of a new budget that allows for the expansion of the Division I Football Championship Subdivision post-season bracket, the Northeast Conference will gain automatic access into the Division I Football Championship beginning in 2010. NEC Football is also eligible for automatic qualification into the championship bracket during the 2008 and 2009 seasons if its champion meets specifications of the bridge program.
The recently-approved budget contained a proposal from the Division I Football Championship Committee calling for an increase in the number of FCS playoff participants to 20, a 25 percent rise from its current 16-team format. The NEC will acquire one of the four added berths and be guaranteed an opportunity to play for the 2010 FCS Championship.

I was a bit disappointed since some earlier articles indicated that the NEC would be elligible sooner. There is no reason why the club couldn't be opened up sooner. The sooner it is opened the more progress the NEC and others left out towrds equitey with the other FCS (1-AA) programs.

This "compromise" to the NEC and others that allows entry earlier really is not much of a deal-
The Division I playoff committee adopted changes in the selection process that will guarantee entry into the postseason for any conference champion that wins at least eight games against Division I opponents, wins two non-conference games against teams from auto-bid leagues and ranks 16th or higher in an average of the Sports Network top-25 poll, the coaches poll and the Gridiron Power index (GPI) computer ranking.
They really should be in simply by ranking in the top 16. The Dukes had a much better chance to qualify in the weaker MAAC since they had more games to play out of conference. This year they play Dayton. They are a much better team than Holy Cross was when we played them last, but they are not from a playoff conference.

I don't think the Dukes could qualify this year since they only have one game against a playoff league (Bucknell). Penn, which was a strong FCS team when the Duke played them would not have helped either since the Ivy League doesn't participate either. Wins against Bucknell, Dayton, Albany and Monmouth this year should be considered quality wins.

Has any "Mid-Major" ever been ranked in the top 16? I know that the Dukes were close a few years back before they lost to Albany in the windy slush. They may have had the highest ranking ever. I'd love to drop the "Mid-Major" name when the NEC goes scholarship.
