I resurrected a post I made in July regarding the possible expansion of the play-off field to 24 teams without extending the length of the play-offs.

The Southland Conference Commissioner, Tom Burnett, has proposed the expansion of the field of teams participating in the FCS playoffs from the current 20 teams to 22 or 24. The Southland Conference is a co-sponsor of the FCS Championship game which was played for the first time at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco Park, TX, on Jan. 7, 2011. The championship games for the 2011 and 2012 seasons will be held at this facility in Jan. 2012 and Jan. 2013, respectively.

During the last football season there were 125 FCS teams of which the 20 playoff teams represented only 16% of all FCS teams. Expanding to 24 teams would increase the level of playoff participation to 19.2 %. This is pale in comparison to the over 50% of the FBC teams who play in a multitude of bowl games.

The current 20-team format has only 8 teams actually playing in the first round and grants 12 teams byes for that round. The expanded format could have 16 teams playing in the first round and giving only 8 teams byes. The expanded format still would result in 16 teams playing in the second round as is currently the case so there would be no need for an additional week to be added to the playoff schedule to accommodate the additional teams. Note that many FCS coaches would like the field expanded as well.

Commissioner Burnett also had some interesting comments about the NCAA's raising of the thresholds for teams' switching from the FCS to the FBS which could provide more stability to the FCS. (Villanova comes to mind.) Here's a link to Commissioner Burnett's interview.
