Just returned from the game. It was a fun night. I had a good time.
Major props to the tailgate. I really enjoyed it. I said hey to RE and I saw a variety of the other teams coachs. It was really nice. I liked the food and the Straub.
Red Flash showed more on offense than they ever have against us. Interceptions saved the day.
Two negatives
1. There is nothing on the visiting sidelines to block people from just entering and watching for free. I saw a large St. Francis group come in and just sit in stone bleachers. None of them paid. Isn't this a money making affair? They have always had railings up before. What is in the logic in letting people (especially the visitors) in for free?
2. Not putting up the temp bleachers on the visiting sidelines at the 50 is just plain silly. I just do not understand that logic.
Announced crowd was 2,400. I have no clue if that is true due to the not knowing how many seats there are. 1,100 or 2,100. I just know there were quite a few people standing or sitting on grass, because there was no place to sit.

Agreed- Tailgate area was great. With no halftime show it was a good place to go and have a Straub and some chips. The Straub Dark is a GOOD BEER! Not charging visitors is a crime!!!- Make them pay for their seats and put the $ towards more seating.
Fantastic win, but I couldn't understand the play calling in the second half. We were running the ball well with 6 mins. left and were still throwing the ball and stopping the clock and on one drive going backwards. Conner needs to make better decisions when under pressure to throw the ball away without being called for grounding or the silly interception. He can't do that against Dayton or Albany.

There is no railing, no ropes, nothing. Would you pay if you did not have to? Honestly, the logic in not having any sort of gate or usher system checking to see if people paid is just stupid.
I actually aam going to pay for the tailgate and not pay for a ticket in the future, if they are going to be that lazy.

Great win and a fun game- But I am wondering why I should make a contribution to the new athletic fund if it is obvious the department can afford to pass up a few thousand dollars by not charging admission from the visitors. Another example of the poor design of the new field. It seats less and allows folks to just wander up without paying. This field ha so much promise if only they would have thought things out such as cantilevering more seats out over Bluff Street and adding bleachers in a horseshoe all around.

Final post of the night. I really do not understand why they renovated Rooney Field in this manner. It was a significant amount of money for no real benefit.
It is a great soccer field. I will give them that.

Listened to the game online.. read all the posts. Let's take some action folks! I heard an interview by Brian Colona (sp?) who says he is willing to talk to anyone about anything Duke related. Could someone contact him about some of these issues? He may be in a position to help. Really, who wants to donate when we aren't even charging for entry to the game? Do we need to get some kind of petition started? Nominate a Dukes fan rep? Let's get on the bandwagon while there is positive momentum for Duquesne football!

KKD- I was at the game so I didn't hear the call on the radio. I tried to get the Rezone re-broadcast, but it isn't working.
The Dukes seemed to have their entire Athletic Dept. there. I saw all of the coaches and had a nice chat with Bob Derda (I think- PR?) and one of Suzie's new caoches and his family. It was great to see Ron and all the others supporting the Football program!! They have some real school spirit and its building!! You're right- I hope they do listen

Just got back from the game- Wonderful night. When these Freshmen get to be Juniors with an even more mature Conner Dixon- WATCH OUT!!!!! ITS EASY TO GO STANDING ROOM ONLY WITH SO FEW SEATS!

Overall it's a win. .The team has improved and will continue to improve.Given that SF had so many seniors returning, we did a better job than last year. Tyler Scruggs needs to be in the mix more. Too many penalties though and too much time getting the play into Dixon.

How the heck can anyone know how many people are at the game if at least half get in for free and don't get a ticket. It's a shame such a good game has this huge cloud hanging over it - the stadium is just plain awful and inadequate. For goodness sake even the local high school had to change venue because it's so inadequate.

1. The limited seating in the Rooney Field renovation was a result of administrative decisions which valued esthetics more than the practicality of what would best serve the viewing fans. Don't assume that such a decision was endorsed by the AD.
2. The attendance at last night's game may demonstrate the need to erect temporary bleachers on the Academic Walk side of the field.
3. Note that the 15'-20' wide deck at the top of the new stands is sufficiently designed to to be able to support the weight of the addition of several more rows of seating including fans in place of picnic tables with umbrellas.
4. In the preliminary planning stage I understand that architectural renderings have been made showing some permanent seating in the end zone near Mellon Hall.
5. I was not aware of free access to the concrete seating near Academic walk. This, of course, has to be corrected and can be done with the erection of temporary fences and the placement of ticket takers (with hand stamps) as was done on the Bluff Street side.
6. The $15 tail gate party seemed to be pretty well received from my observation as well as from comments presented on this forum. It's possible that the area under cover of Mellon Hall may be expanded to accommodate more patrons.
7. Let the Baggo competition begin!
8. The Dukes are 1-0 in the NEC. Not a bad start, but hopefully the team will improve as the season progresses.

Nice post- I don't think we can go any closer to the field with the soccer lines, but we can, as you say, add some seating on top and even build out over the sidewalk with a few support beams and cantilevering it up and over Bluff Street a bit. They may need to lose the parking on the other side and move Bluff Street over a lane by the field.
I get the feeling as well that the final design was modified by higher ups than the AD. I remember a while back that there was talk of preserving the "sight lines" of the Mon Valley. The view would be even more dramatic from the top of the stands.
I don't know about you, but a well designed field with seats all around in a horse shoe would add to the collegiate feeling of academic walk better than the stone block seating area. There is a way to allow open flow into and onto the field and still have some permanent stands. At the very least turn all of the benches around to face the field during football season!
There should not have been so many having to stand last night or sitting on the grass. We were lucky the weather was nice for all the folks who had to sit on the ground or on those blocks. I've sat on them before. With regular bleachers on that side there could be room for more rows and still bring in a set of temporary stands during the season. If it comes to it, we could even reinforce the roof above the pool for a few rows of end zone seats. With some quick estimation, we could squeeze no more than 5,000 without massive stands over Academic Walk.
Don't think I'm ungrateful- Bathrooms were great and the stands that were there well done. I like the press box, but it takes out the best seating area at the 50. I'd have put the vending windows under the stands facing the street and added a few more rows there.

I think you need the temporary bleacher seating on the visitor side as common courtesy. It looks awful if other teams fans come to the game and they have to sit on the stone bleachers. The temp bleachers they used to have served that purpose well. And then the overflow and DU students sat on the bleachers.
The temporary fencing previously used as a gate system was used to protect the Mellon Hall poseys, section off the game area, and set-up tailgate area.
Both problems have simple solutions for THIS season. Set-up bleachers again and buy more fencing.
