Subject: Patriot League Scholarship Vote

The Patriot League just voted to table the idea of offering scholarships for 2 years. Fordham, Colgate and I believe Lehigh were in favor of scholarships. Georgetown, Lafayette and Holy Cross were opposed.

Since Fordham is already giving scholarships, this may push them to the NEC or the CAA.

It was my understanding that when Fordham elected to offer football scholarships, it intended to offer the full compliment of 63 scholarships which is the maximum permitted for FCS by the NCAA. If that is the case, that would rule out Fordham's interest in seeking membership in the NEC which will allow a maximum of only 40 scholarships by 2013. Note that the NEC maximum for the 2010 season was 34 scholarships.

The CAA might want to restore its presence in NYC since Hofstra bowed out. Fordham just the team to fill that vacancy.

I don't think Fordham is up to 40 scholarships yet and were not near the top of their league even with the advantage. They can easily mold their program to fit the conference they choose. With Hofstra, Rhode Island and UMass gone, the CAA may be a southern league for travel. I really don't think that Fordham has what it takes to compete in the CAA. How long have they been trying in the A-10 in basketball?

Rhode Island seems to have made a wise choice since the NEC has played well against even the best in the FCS without breaking the bank.
