This post is addressed to those "bottoms" who have yet to experience their first REAL whipping.
I confess to being a "light bottom". I don't have a particularly high tolerance for pain. A couple dozen "licks" with a leather belt and I'm crying like a small child. And once, a particularly severe and lengthy belt whipping had me involuntarily yelling at the top of my lungs, a response that surprised even me.
For me, bondage is a necessary part of a punishment scene. Admittedly, I could never endure a painful whipping unless I was tied down and forced to take it. But it is more than that. Ironically, that which entails the most risk, namely, surrendering one's physical freedom to the control of another person, is also that which provides the most excitement in a scene. There are things a bottom can do to reduce the risks somewhat. And I recommend you listen to your inner voice if it tells you something is not quite right about a scene or the person you are considering submitting yourself to. But, at the end of the day, there will always be some risk, and if one is to have a fulfilling experience, one must ultimately take a leap of faith that things will work out for the best.
There is something to be said in favor of fantasy. The most obvious thing is that fantasy doesn't hurt and there are no risks. For example, in fantasy, I can imagine myself being "strung up" and subjected to a severe bullwhipping, something that, in reality, might leave me with lasting welts and scars, or which I might not even survive! Of course, it goes without saying that a REAL bullwhipping would hurt like hell, and the pain would be unbearable! And one of my favorite fantasies would be very risky to try to arrange in real life, namely, having a police officer, in uniform, give me a whipping with his belt! Fantasy does indeed have a legitimate place!
However, I imagine that most people with our mutual interest would probably be happier with themselves for having the courage to submit to a REAL whipping at least once in their life. You might not like it. In fact, you might even hate it and never want to experience it again. But, at least, you'll know what a REAL whipping is all about and have something exciting to remember and feed your fantasies with. Finally, to paraphrase a quotation whose source I don't know and whose exact form I'm not certain of: "My only regrets in life are the things I did not do."
