There was something about that relatively quiet (compared with the sound the back of the hairbrush makes on your bare bottom) tapping sound that was soooo threatening. It was always just loud enough to convey the foreshadowing message of what was to come. But you knew it wasn't hurting her palm the way it was going to sting your bottom.
