I don't think most women's panties provide any significant protection that would result in being better or worse than a thong. Boy's light cotton boxer shorts are similar but for some reason the seemingly heavier cloth used in Jockey's might pad the heiney a little.
My sister and I seldom had the opportunity to draw any comparisons when mom spanked us. With very few exceptions we were always bare assed and the redness was easy to see.
Actually, compared to some later experiences mom was almost always matter of fact about what was happening. Despite the forced nudity of the punishment sessions she had some serious hang-ups about us being naked, especially as we matured into near adult teens.

So I wonder if having thongs on would have any effect other then feeling that witnesses could not see between your cheeks.
