With Mass being one of the smallest states (or commonwealths) in the US, their quantity is always impressive. Having said that, the quality is lacking in Miss. I'm seeing a handful who could easily make T15, but a Miss USA? I'm not sure yet.

Who're in your Top 5?

The term 'glamazon' refers to tall glammed up delegate who has the ability to stomp over the competition with her looks and runway skills.

But despite the term being coined in the mid-2000s, I often wondered who I'd refer to as the first real glamazon at Miss Universe.

There have been many but Colombia's Paula Andrea Betancourt comes to mind.

She was a giant who still opted to wear 5 inch stilettos, she was painted up, well put together, had loads of hype and support, and ended up battling through the competition right up until coronation.

Who is the woman you'd refer to as the first glamazon at MU and why?

Pretty good stream from Connecticut. My choices didn’t change too much, except one major addition.

Top 5 choices: Alissa P, Jessica M, Khadesia W, Savannah G, and either Erika P or Amanda T. Can’t quite choose the last one.

Khadesia was a very pleasant surprise! Didn’t expect her to be as good as she is. A variety of gown colors and styles. Alissa in nude/silver, Jessica in blue, Khadesia in yellow, Savannah in beaded crystal/nude, Erika in Gold, Amamda in gold and red. Looking forward to lots of different looks during finals tomorrow.

One of the teens fell in her gown, always horrible to see. Some pretty choices there, but I’m going with one of the two Avas.

READ! #MissUniverse 2018 CATRIONA GRAY defends ‘copycats’ in Miss Universe 2020.
“It’s not mine to own.”

This is what Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray said when she was asked to react about
the “copycat’ allegations thrown against some Miss Universe 2020 candidates, particularly
Miss Thailand Amanda Obdam and Miss Indonesia Ayu Maulida. Miss Universe Thailand
trends online as alleged ‘copycat’ of Catriona Gray.

She doesn’t agree with the term “copycat,” preferring “resemblance” to her “brand.”
During a virtual conference, the 27-year-old girlfriend of Sam Milby noted how she has
been consistent with her look, including a signature ear cuff, lava walk, dramatic turn,
as with the thigh-high slit.

“My brand was very consistent from my nationals to Miss Universe, so I understand,
maybe, resemblance and silhouettes,” she said. Though, the Filipina model-singer
maintained she can’t take ownership.

“And it doesn’t necessarily put them at a disadvantage. People may have the recall,
like, ‘Oh, that’s a similar dress.’ But each girl has her own journey. And if they’ve gone
with that style, it means that they’re beautiful and confident in that. And who are we
to say that it affects their journey? It’s their decision, it’s their journey and how they
portray themselves,” she pointed out.

Catriona empathized with the beauty queens, relating she knows it is all about the
girl wanting to feel her most beautiful, and her most empowered, and her most confident.
“So, if that is in a style that perhaps she feels that way, then own it.”

“I got so emotional. I got affected from what I saw on social media which was my complete fault.

It’s not just I was reading comments but they were also tagging and messaging me on my social media accounts. And it’s not just fans but some familiar people saying “You should’ve done this and that”.

And people were saying they were disappointed. And ang mali ko (and my mistake is) I listened to their voices.”

Rafaela Plastira (22 yrs) from Trikala, has just been appointed to represent GREECE at Miss Universe 2021, reportedly in Costa Rica.

This marks Greece's return to Miss Universe, after a three year absence.

Rafaela was crowned Star Hellas (Miss Greece) 2019 and represented Greece at Miss World 2019 (where she was unfortunately a clapper). Hopefully that Miss World experience will help her at Miss Universe (let's remember that Angela Visser and Mpule Kwelagobe were also clappers at Miss World).

Best of luck to Rafaela at Miss Universe!

Watch "Miss Teen USA Crowning Moments (1983-2020)" on YouTube

In watching this, 2 things are undeniable true;

1) Miss Teen USA title was awarded to states that are not powerhouses when it comes to the Miss USA title and

2) Hawaii, California and to lesser extent (Georgia, Texas and California) fared well

Beauty pageants have long been a contested part of our culture: some see them as a hangover from a far more patriarchal era, while others defend them for helping women of all ages to feel more confident and to know their self-worth.

Are pageants inherently misogynist or toxic, or can they ever be empowering?
