(CNN)The next edition of the Miss America pageant will scrap swimsuits and will be more inclusive to women of all sizes, the contest announced Tuesday.

Gretchen Carlson, the chairwoman of the Miss America board of directors, announced on "Good Morning America" that the event will no longer feature a swimsuit competition.
Miss America will be a competition, not a pageant, Carlson said on the show Tuesday.
"We will no longer judge our candidates on their outward physical appearance. That's huge," she said.
Carlson also said the new Miss America competition will be more inclusive to women of "all shapes and sizes."

[> Subject: I was just going to post a similar FYI. Wow, this is not really surprising but I think it is a terrible mistake. MAO has had this identity crisis for long time, but now it really raises the question, What's the point of having a pageant (excuse me, "competition")? Why not just give everyone a test? If it's all about talent, we already have American Idol. I've said all along that I think pageants need to go in the other direction and just embrace the craziness and even the sexism inherent in a beauty pageant. Anyway, I just hope this announcement doesn't cause IMG/MUO to follow suit, because if they do it is all over.

[> [> Subject: They even scrapped the evening gown competition (well..sorta.) They are now replacing it with fashion of their choice so an evening gown isn't required.

[> [> [> Subject: The directive actually says "eveningwear" that expresses their own sense of style & empowerment, but by definition that still means formal. The truth is that contestants have never been required to wear gowns & this might open them up to some exciting/interesting/perhaps disastrous fashion choices. What Fun! The main point of this change though is that how she looks & walks during this segment will NOT be judged no matter what she is wearing - scoring will be for what she says while wearing it!

[> Subject: I would have been accepting if the swimsuit portion was replaced with another segment that is dedicated towards fitness and lifestyle; I personally welcome a fitness/exercise routine similar to MAOT or Distinguished Young Women. This would display how committed a contestant is towards maintaining a healthy lifestyle a gradual as oppose to a drastic change. However, to replace it with possibly another speaking segment is absurd. And who knows what is going to replace the evening gown portion. The idea of hearing contestants spew more canned responses bores me. I dont think this gimmick will last very long and will go the same way as the Miss America quiz which was a disaster.

[> [> Subject: I feel the same way. I hate to wish for a pageant to fail, but MAO has been taking itself way too seriously for at least 30 years now. This is the last straw in taking all the *fun* out of pageants. I blow my nose in Gretchen Carlson's hair.

[> [> Subject: Noooo! I want to cry from your comment lol! Its almost a 100 year old pageant; an American tradition. Id be so sad to see it disappear :( Id be sad for any of the big pageants (national and international) to run their course.

[> Subject: I'm reduced to the idea that this is now a competition job interview on a glossy stage with ladies dressed in sweats and hairbuns. Cut the show to an hour, let them speak platform, some perform a good talent worth watching, crown a winner in a romper. Done. Seriously, this format will only lead to the way MAOT is handled. To a theatre in Orlando, untelevised.

[> Subject: I feel I do understand where they are going with this and their reasoning, and it could be an interesting tv show if the production is done right..maybe "Shark Tank-like" interviews on their platforms, interesting evening wear, etc., BUT it will NOT be a pageant, by their own statements. I am a fan of pageants. I wish them well, but I really have no idea what this will mean for them down the road.
