Subject: Who do you think of when you think of a pageant patty?

This was inspired by a discussion in another thread, but who is your go-to pageant patty?

What do we even mean by "pageant patty"? To me, that means someone who seems overly prepared and robotic, with every single hair in place and a fake perky persona.

The first MUO contestant who occurs to me is Shauna Gambill, Miss California 1998. I know she has lots of fans, but she always seemed "too much" in my book. I was glad Shawnae Jebbia won that year; she was an anti-patty if ever there was one. Just compare their noses! :-)

I'd also add Lu Parker (I still have nightmares where she mouths out a billion "thank yous" to nobody who cares) and Kandace Krueger who looked like the mother of a the bride at MU 2001 with that hair style and that Stepford wife walk.

[> Subject: Wendy was standing next to two patty girls in 98 and she won. But I first heard of the word pageant-patty in 2004 so it felt like the girls in that era inspired this term. Shandiís hyena laugh is inside the patty starter pack and I hated Gazini for doing that in 2019. Being patty could only take you so far in Universe but there has to be a right balance in order to win the crown. Iím glad that all recent winners had that balance. Alicia was the last winner who was patty but that was 1996 so totally acceptable.

[> Subject: I do not think the term pageant patty is necessarily negative though; Chaney Painter and MJ Lastimosa are some of the biggest pageant patties but I found them quite charming. KatyJohso, VT USA 2001 was considered a huge patty who moved from FL to win state pageants. Others that come to mind right away Kristi Glakas, Patti Dunn & Danielle Jones.

[> [> Subject: You are right. On the final night, she registered more natural, as it was what Maureen Reiddy wanted from contestants at USA 2000.. I think it is more of her history as pageant contestant on the state level, though I am not sure to what extent what was described as her antics was true.

[> Subject: Many of you remember the iconic poster Meemaw who especially disliked patties or delegates they described as "peasants". Among the contestants they disliked the most were Marisol Malaret, Joanna Gapinska, Lauren Lanning, Kristy Glakas and Holly Roehl. And they described Holly Roehl as the epitome of pattyness. But the funny thing is that at one point Holly found out and reached out to Meemaw who did a great interview with her. And she came across as sassy and intelligent and laugh at her past pattyness. She competed twice at Teen and Miss with Ali Landry, that is why that intereview was also interesting, she mentioned what was like a "pageant Bible" that she had at Teen but Ali had at Miss.

[> [> [> Subject: Madison looked so much better when she won MPRU. At MU, she looked facially bloated, extremely pale (which is why the lipstick and gown colors looked off on her) and her answers didn't have enough substance. The only explanation I had for her advancing as far as she did is because many of us knew going into the telecast that a black woman was going to win and what better foil to have as 1st RU than a blonde barbie type.

[> Subject: Catriona Gray's Final 5 speech at Miss World was probably one of the pageant "pattiest" responses I've ever heard. In fact, it seems most Miss Philippines contestants come across way over rehearsed, and dated, when delivering their responses, however their styling tends to over-shadow those skills and continues to make them contenders in that regard. I adore the Filipino fans, and their enthusiasm, and that makes "some" of their finalists worthy.

[> [> Subject: Thank God she improved a lot because that was one the reasons why she didnít win Miss World. She also said in recent video that she saw the responses of other people and she tried to improve herself and be more relatable. You are right, most girls here in the Philippines tend to be like that in their responses because 1. Speaking in English is always almost mandatory in international pageants. Girls are afraid to make grammar mistakes thus the memorized answer 2. Older trainers tend to hand them a book of commonly asked questions in pageants for them to study and of course they prepare their memorized answers. Look how cringey the interviews of Gazini. Itís like sheís matching which one of her prepared answers will match the question thrown at her. 3. People here tend to really like those kind of answers. The more embellished the sentences are, the more intelligent you seem to the people.

Gazini was way over the top with the patty energy for sure, prob bc she was overcompensating for her nerves. Personally, it was a real bummer bc I really loved her face. Also, def Glakas but she was more over acting vs being patty, but Iíve only seen her crowning and felt safe enough to assume that I wouldnt have liked her anyway so I didnt bother digging deeper
