Subject: Filipinas at Miss USA.

Why do you think Filipino-Americans rarely win state pageants or do not participate in state pageants in great numbers. It has always been a bit of a mistery to me, this community LIVES & BREATHES pageantry, even many straight guys are aware of who are the current winners!

I believe the last full-blooded Filipina at Miss USA was Jeanette Josue, Miss New Jersey USA 2001... Since then we had a few ladies that were half or a a quarter Filipina, Maureen Montagne and Audra Mari come to mind.

With the current trend od diversity that IMG favours and focuses upon, do you believe we will see much more Filipina/Asian-American girls entering and winning state pageants?

I believe, we will see many more Asians in general in Miss USA, but I would probably say that Indian Americans will benefit from it the most, as they have more of a profile IMG is looking for. Also, the number of Africans-Americans will skyrocket this year.

I would not be surprised if Shivali Patel (North Carolina), Prutha Patel (Rhode Island), Miso Jang (Idaho), etc go to Miss USA. I would not be surprised if Starla Sampaco (Washington) goes either. This is one Filipina that was a Miss Teen in her state. In Texas, I do not see an Asian win, but from the contestants that compete, a brainy African-American Hannah Johannes seems like the favorite to win.

On another subject, do you believe there would be some interesting crossovers from the Filipina pageantry to Miss USA? As example, I was thinking of Jamie Herrell, who won Miss Earth for the PH, even if she is born in the USA. She was 19 when she won... It would be interesting to have someone like that on the Miss USA stage!

[> Subject: I think Filipina-Americans would rather choose to compete in Miss Philippines as they have higher chances of winning there. I remember the winner when Miriam Quaimbao competed. I don't think she would even win a state pageant in the US but she got the MU Philippines title in Manila. Fortunately, Miriam got sent to Trinidad instead of her. Some say the dethroned winner would have coasted through the Q&A portion, which admittedly, was Miriam's waterloo. However, before she can even set foot to the Q&A, she needs to do well in the presentation show, which I believe she will not be able to do as excellently as Miriam did.

[> [> Subject: mariam didn't place first in any of the 5 competitive segments at miss universe that year (ss, interview, eg, top 5 q&a, and top 3 q&a). people praise her as a standout solely for the reason that she milked tripping in the prelim gown segment. other than that she wasn't miles ahead of anyone that year albeit better than other filipinas sent to miss universe at the time.

[> [> Subject: In 1999, I think Janelle Bautista (who was the Miss Philippines titleholder who had to resign because she is an American citizen) might have had a good chance of winning Miss USA that year, had she represented a non-sash state. Competition that year was relatively even, as there were no real front-runners and the unusual selection of Kim Presler.

[> [> [> Subject: 1999...still a transition year for Miss USA...1/51 of the contestants was black (NOT DC, but AZ's Cara Jackson who should have placed IMHO...), the 1999 candidates projected an older look, a handful looked good, VA, SC, CA (expect the double bun and makeup), FL...

[> Subject: Why do I think Filipino-Americans rarely win state pageants? Because the Filipino pageant culture is hellbent on the following: 1) Acting like drag queens on stage 2) Wearing tacky outfits and gowns that look as if they were made in the 1970s 3) Rabid Filipino fans who get nasty at the drop of a hat (even when their Filipina delegate wins).

Miss Philippines is only doing well nowadays because they are PAYING more in franchise fees to international pageant organizers. That's what being a pageant powerhouse means. Pay to place.

[> [> Subject: You are simply jealous. Get over it. Philippines has been traning their girls really hard even in the national pageants. There are hardly Fil-Am trainers who train Fil-Am girls in the US coz there is no demand.

[> Subject: This is a really interesting question. Less than 1% of the US population is Fillipino, but I couldn't find the age group breakdown. Almost 50% live in California, with the next biggest areas being NYC and Chicago. About 45% were born in the Phillippines. So on one hand, I don't think there are really that many in the US.

Author:
On the other hand - they don't need pageants to get ahead - so they don't participate. That would be my guess.
