[> Subject: Not at all, but if anything, it will benefit the participation of BOTH contestants, as both will be able to tell stories. So I see both of them in the top finalists of both MU and MW, as well as both Mexicos

[> [> Subject: If Miss Universe is in November, you can bet Puerto Rico will use the hurricances to her advantage. But its no different than the Fillipinos using the same story about growing up poor in a village, drinking water from a dirty well, then working at age 4 and buying a home at 12 for 50 of their family members.

[> [> [> [> [> Subject: And what does that have to do with this post? Other than deflecting from Puerto Rico, which seems to be the goal. And actually, the Philippine reps from 2011, 2013, and 2014/15 didn't use the same story. Nice alternative facts there. It seems like the post incited the need to deflect away from Puerto Ricans, why I don't know, towards Filipinos because its all their fault right? Sounds like Trump logic with Mexicans.

[> [> [> Subject: Puerto Rico will, though under IMG it needs to be presented in a clear/concise way and not over the top way a la Osmel... imagine if hurricanes were hitting Venezuela, Osmel would make up new stories all the time, that THIS or THAT GIRL lost her home/parents, etc. If it were a pre-internet era, Osmel would have stated that Mariam Habach was a Syrian refugee traumatized by conflict.

[> [> [> [> Subject: Please, if Haiti could get away with her earthquake was a personal failure mumbo jumbo the Puerto Rican reps can make something work. They just need it to be uplifting and empowering, and not your typical Latin telenovela melodrama. Agreed, Osmel would be working up that angle no sooner than hurricane touchdown.

[> [> [> [> Subject: Guys, not sure you are fully aware of how bad it is over there. No water and electricity available forv3.5 million people. 90% of food comes from imports and the ports are destroyed. Importing was a forced trade to ensure 20% tax for US was created and people can't get cash or gas. People are beginning to die and starve with donations sitting on the tarmac without any distributions getting to remote areas. I'm sure this will become a major story because we aren't talking about a third world country. These Americans can't even get flights to relocate with family until the electrical grid is fixed which will take at least six months.

[> [> [> [> [> Subject: Isn't pageantry as a whole about TRIVIALIZING important events? I am sorry but World peace, women's rights, natural disasters, etc have been trivialized for decades. No one wishes any more suffering on Puerto Rico nor anywhere else in the Caribbean. However, you can BET that the issue of hurricanes such as Maria, Irma, etc.. will be front and stage and WILL BE TRIVIALIZED, because that is what the current direction of MU ogr. and the owners want and are looking for... it is implicitly encouraged by the organization, partly because of ratings and more attention on the pageants (ie: more money as a result).

[> Subject: Puerto Rico should take a break any way and that has nothing to do with the hurricane. It has to do with them having no money and wanting the mainland to bail them out with little to no conditions. If your territory/state is hard up for cash I think pageant participation should be the last thing on their minds. Plus why aren't these territories required to compete at Miss USA any way?

[> [> Subject: Does their government pay for the contestant to go to Miss Universe? If not, what would their debt have to do with a young lady participating. Additionally, it's actually the banks lobbyists pushing to bail out. These are the lender's holding the bonds. They won't settle on having the debt turned into loans with payments that include a reasonable principle and interest. Secondly, you need to educate yourself when you say they are fickle and are citizens only when it serves them. They contribute 3.5 Billion annually in taxes to the federal government which is twice as much as many other states with twice as many residents living in their state. Also, you just offended thousands of Puerto Rican citizens who serve in our military every year and fight and die for your freedom on our mainland. Shame on you!!!
