Subject: Miss USA pageant eyeing Reno as potential location

Are the Miss USA pageant and the Biggest Little City a perfect fit?

Miss USA parent company Endeavor thinks so as it made a pitch to the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority board on Thursday to hold the event in the area, with the Grand Sierra Resort’s Grand Theatre mentioned as a potential venue for the pageant.

Having the event in Northern Nevada will put a large spotlight on Reno-Tahoe, said Jonathan Seiden, legal counsel for Endeavor, which was formed with the merger of the William Morris Agency and IMG. The parent company for Miss USA, which also oversees the Miss Universe pageant, was previously owned by Donald Trump.

“(Miss USA is) distributed to over 70 countries in the world,” Seiden said. “When we highlight Reno-Tahoe, it won’t be just for the United States but for an international audience who maybe doesn’t know much about the area and may want to come visit.”

The Miss USA pageant, however, says it will need help from local government and businesses in order to successfully hold the event in Reno-Sparks. Each region is different but the assistance can come in the form of a mixture of tax breaks, a cash stipend and free hotel rooms for contestants.
In Louisiana, for example, the organization was able to receive $1 million through a production tax credit plus a cash stipend of about $300,000 to $400,000. In exchange, the event yielded an economic impact of about $5 million for Shreveport, La., Seiden said. Miss USA’s production staff alone spends up to $400,000 on every city that the event is held at, he said. The digital exposure from the event is also worth about $1.5 million, Seiden added.

“This is not a handout,” Seiden said. “You’ll get a nice feature on prime time TV about the city and about the contestants leading to the event. (Viewers) will see downtown, your mountains, your beautiful murals … and contestants talking about all the wonderful things you can do in the Reno-Tahoe area.”

The RSCVA board did not make a decision on the event but says it is open to holding more discussions with Endeavor about Miss USA. Seiden declined to provide specifics when asked by the Reno Gazette Journal about what dates they were eyeing if Reno gets picked as a pageant site. Last year's Miss USA pageant site, for example, was not announced until March, just two month before the actual event.

— This is a developing story and will be updated.
