Subject: Miss USA Being Pressured By MUO To Wear Certain Gowns

I recently recalled an interview Miss USA 2005 Chelsea Cooley did a few years back where she talked about her experience at Miss Universe 2005. If you all remember, she ended up wearing a rather lackluster beige dress for the EG competition during the live telecast. She did not make the Top 5 as a result.

In this interview (which I cannot find online anymore!), Chelsea mentioned that American fashion designer Pamela Dennis (who judged Miss USA 2005) made an arrangement with MUO that basically forced Chelsea to wear one of Dennis's dresses during the finals at Miss Universe. To add insult to injury, the dress that Chelsea had initially picked (a red one, I believe) wasn't sent and instead the beige is what Chelsea had to wear.

A year later, in 2006, Miss USA Tara Connor was forced to wear a frumpy purple creation by Project Runway contestant, Kayne Gillaspie, during the EG competition that year. Project Runway designer, Santino Rice, served on the final night judges panel. Tara made it into the Top 5 but ended in 5th place. Tara mentioned after her reign how much she hated that gown.

As an aside, Ireland's Rozanna Purcell was coerced into wearing a Sherri Hill gown for the EG segment in 2010 when MUO basically blackmailed her on the spot. She was eliminated after this round.

In 2011, Alyssa Campenella wore a blue George Hobeika gown for prelims in Brazil. In 2012, Olivia Culpo wore a pink George Hobeika gown for prelims and finals and won. Coincidence or were they forced to pick this particular designer?

Why I bring this up now is because it seems that all Miss USA winners since 2015 (and ALL Miss USA contestants THIS YEAR!) were forced to wear Sherri Hill. The gowns at Miss USA this year all looked pageant patty to me and the dresses specifically worn by Arkansas and DC (who made Top 10) were both created from the same fabric!

I find it alarming and hypocritical that an organization that preaches "being true to oneself" and "female empowerment" would impose such measures on their participants. Isn't bad enough they have to wear ill-designed swimsuits and those Chinese Laundry tippy-tops?

[> [> Subject: Completely agree with you! I just feel bad that Miss USA winners (and now Miss USA contestants) are the targeted victims of all of this.

[> [> Subject: Rozanna was all set to wear a gem-encrusted gown by a Puerto Rican designer for the final night telecast. For some reason, MUO stepped in and confiscated the gown telling Rozanna she must wear Sherri Hill, which she did. The Puerto Rican gown did not breach any of the rules MUO had set out for gowns being too provocative or revealing. Thus, one can only assume this decision was made due to business. Rozanna was light years ahead of everyone else that year in terms of beauty and perhaps Sherri Hill forced MUO to ensure the most beautiful girl wore one of her frocks for the finals. Interestingly enough, Yara Santiago (Miss World Puerto Rico) ended up wearing the gown meant for Rozanna at Miss World later that same year. CLICK INSIDE for the picture.

[> Subject: Very interesting. Where can I find Tara Connor's statements regarding her Project Runway gown? I never knew about this. I watched that Project Runway episode and it seemed like she favored that gown over the others.

[> [> Subject: The article has been pulled down from the internet as well but I recall it was dicussed on this voy forum back in the day, which is how I found out about it. Tara favored Kanye's purple gown compared to the others because she essentially had to pick the best of the worst. She had no choice but to select one of the gowns to wear but she wasn't happy with any of them.

[> [> Subject: Yes. MUO gave Chelsea and Tara a pass onto the next rounds of competition after gown since elimiation after EG would send a message that their gowns (and business partners) were lackluster. Still not sure why Rozanna got eliminated though.
