Bangladesh will be represented on the Miss Universe stage for the first time this year! Not sure what Shirin is wearing but she's gorgeous!

Crowned by Miss Universe 1994, Sushmita Sen.

[> Subject: I can see her making the cut, not only because she's gorgeous, but the debut of a country at Miss Universe & winning the whole thing puts me back to 1999 :)

[> [> Subject: This is a bit of a tangent, but I'd love to see some new countries in the mix and even taking the crown. But I wonder if it was easier for a first-timer like Botswana to win back in the 90s. These days, it just seems like the Top 15 is almost set in stone from year to year with the usual powerhouse countries. I guess those countries have lots of resources and support for their contestants, and the pageant has separated more than ever into the haves and the have-nots. Occasionally, a non-sash country sneaks in, like Nepal last year, but it feels increasingly rare.

[> [> [> Subject: When IMG took over the pageant there was a rumor that MUO/Paula Shugart mentioned they were interested in crowing delegates from countries that have already won in the past perhaps because it would be easier to demand higher fees from these franchise holders. So far, this rumor holds up as Philippines, France and South Africa have all had previous MU winners. The franchise fees (which we all know differ from country to country) are why I feel we see very little variation in the Top 15. The powerhouse countries put more money into both preparing their delegates and into paying the franchise fees, which is essentially like buying their spot over others. MUO's "picks" every year play into this.

[> [> [> [> Subject: That's a good point about franchise holders/fees. It's a shame though because these days I feel like I can predict the Top 15 without even seeing the contestants: Philippines, South Africa, Indonesia, France, India, Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Australia, USA, Venezuela, Brazil, Thailand, and one spot remaining for a "surprise."

[> [> [> Subject: No tangent at all! I agree! That's why I'm always hoping for more African delegates at Miss Universe AND to place. So many beautiful dark beauties have been ignored at MU.
