Subject: First Runner-Up Moments

Which ones stand out to you?

A few that I remember are...

Miss Universe 1982. The 1st runner up, Miss Guam, was so gracious during the crowning. When the winner, Karen Baldwin, went to sit in the winner's chair, Miss Guam was the first to greet her, helped adjust her crown, wiped lipstick off her cheek, etc. One of my favorite pageant moments.

Miss USA 2005. Just after the announcement that Chelsea Cooley won, you can see the 1st runner up, Miss California, say to her "Good job!!" and she seemed genuinely happy for her.

Miss Universe 1987. As Bob Barker got closer and closer to announcing the result, Miss Italy (the 1st runner up) came closer and closer to a complete meltdown. If it had gone on one second longer I think she would have passed out, LOL.

Miss Teen USA 2000. Probably the most famous reaction from a 1st runner up. When the result is announced, Miss Texas, Nicole O'Brien, visibly says "f*ck!" (or something close to it) and stalks off the stage.

[> [> [> Subject: You might have heard this rumor that was floating around in the late 1990s/early 2000s. During a Miss Teen USA competition where the then-reigning Miss USA and Miss Universe were in attendance, an MUO staff member allegedly described said Miss USA and Miss Universe as "those two cannot stand to be in the same room as each other". I've always thought the Miss USA was Julie Hayek and the Miss Universe was Lorraine Downes.

[> [> [> [> Subject: Lorraine in her autobiography "life, loss, and love" confirmed this. There is a chapter dedicated for her Miss Universe journey. She said she never warmed up to Julie because she made her feel she did not deserve to win the crown. That chapter of her book is very interesting. I can screenshot the chapter if anyone would love to read her tidbits regarding her Miss Universe journey.

The clearest example ever was at Miss Universe 1974 when you could see Miss Wales was disappointed every time she survived the cut. When it was down to the final two, she was actually frowning. She finally smiled a big smile of relief when she was called as 1st Runner Up (I think this was because she knew she was pregnant at the time).

A lot of judges prefer than over more of an overbaked patty. I would have hard time believing she did not work at all to win these competitions and yet ended up 2nd and 1st.

[> Subject: Most first runner-up responses are generally gracious and respectful. However, it’s the poor reactions that everyone will remember. The first that comes to mind is Génesis Dávila reaction to being called first runner-up during the Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2013 Pageant. The seconds leading up to her and Monic Pérez went well, but as soon as Génesis was named first runner-up, the shear disappointment on her face was evident and it took what seemed like a lifetime to acknowledge the audience and judges. Furthermore, she neither congratulated nor acknowledged Monic. This is a classic example of how NOT to react.

However, on another note, we can’t assume someone is happy or mad, friends or not friends, to not have won based on their mannerisms. I know for me, when I was runner up in my pageant, I quickly told her congrats and rushed off back, then hugged and celebrated with her after! Everyone has a different reason, I personally didn’t want to be in the way (opposite of what Miss Nigeria did lol!!)
