Subject: Who are pageant contestants and winners (since 2000) that you find overhyped?

I thought I would play off the post below about pageant contestants who you really like but others are not wild about. I know this post has probably been made in the past, but let's make a fresh one only with pageant contestants/winner in the millennium.

Who are the pageant contestants and winners that you really dont like but just really dont get?
I'll go first- Olivia Jordan (SORRY!!). I think she is seems very fake. I couldn't stand that fake laugh she did with her mouth. I didn't think she was facially strong either. Now that I think of it, I'm really not overly fond of any Miss OK USA winner.

[> Subject: Oooooh, ok. Here goes: The one who recently really bugged me the most was Thailand 2019, GORGEOUS but really irritating. Now, the rest: The Daltons, Chelsea Cooley, Cynthia Oliveira (again, gorgeous but seemed really mean), Riyo Mori, Morgan Woolard, Nana Merriweather, Amy Willerton, Tiana Griggs, Migbelis Castillanos, Anna Garcia, Brittany McGowan, Pia Wurtzbach (masterclass in patty but she seems nice so I want to like her), Ariana Miyamoto (super hyped), Laura Gonzales, Genesis Davila (ugh ugh ugh), Tianna Tuamoheloa. I realize some may not have found them hyped so maybe this is more about reps I didnít like. There are others that I thought were over hyped but imo were deserving, ex. Shandi & Catriona. As well, I agree about OK winners, except Lindsay Hill. I loved her.

[> [> Subject: More, I prefer the girls who quietly competed, placed well, and received the hype they deserved after the pageant. I love those and Iíd like to see a post asking fans who they thought deserved more hype than they received. Iíd put Davina Bennet, Colombia 2019, and Mexico 2019 on that list.

[> [> [> Subject: Absolutely to those you listed above. In more recent years, I also thought Chhavi Verg (MISS NJ USA 17) deserved more hype and didn't get it. She was very pretty and I think really stood out that year. I remembered how shocked people were on this board when she continued advancing but I knew she would go far.

[> [> Subject: I agree with all. Thailand 2019 I feel played the blind eye route attention and it worked because she got the publicity. She was in regardless. My larger issue of hate towards Indonesia, Philippines, and Thailand is that the overwhelming majority of the their reps are mixed white.

[> [> [> [> Subject: That is a good point. But I don't get excited about mixed race girls in general. Now if I was straight, I would be in love with them. But you are right I feel like African and Europe is always supported but Asia is not. I think a good theory is that at least with European and African, their mixed race girls faired pretty good. Asian countries especially Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia have consistently sent mixed race and placing. Whereas prior, they rarely made the cut.

[> [> [> [> [> Subject: I think it comes down to percentage of biracial people in these countries. They are a very small percentage and de facto are not representative of their countries (Southeast Asia). There is almost always a similar scenario, a white father who is usually significantly older than the mother and they are often rich. A colonial mentality persists in that the ideal is to be as white as possible and this is the key to success. As half White people are orten gloryfied. As example 3 of Filipina MW and MU winners last decade had mich older fathers.

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> Subject: I think the answer below is spot on. It is unfortunate that whatever is white is still worshipped in a bit if a colonial way in the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand, which was never a colony. Amazing girls that are full blooded South-East Asians lose opportunities to half white girls who often grew up in another country. No one would care if it happens once a decade, but it happens there all the time.

[> [> [> [> Subject: What disturbs me is how the asian fans WORSHIP these mixed-race women, while at the same time rejecting their own. This doesnt happen only in pageants. If you see TV, print ads, fashion, etc. in Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, etc, its all about the mixed ones. I loved Paweensuda Drouin but I was bummed by the fact that she is not even Thai, she cant speak Thai, she is CANADIAN and did not even speak Thai in her national pageant's q/a round, yet she STILL won (but Catriona was a judge and they are friends) and the fans were going berserk, IDK, in my country we support girls who have our blood and not coming from abroad just for a beauty title.

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> Subject: I absolutely agree. I think not being able to speak Thai at all is a handicap. Tamaryn Green's ( South African '18) her first runner up is competing in Thailand but sitting out this year so she can learn more of the language. Look for her to be a huge favorite during the Thailand's 2021 pageant season

[> Subject: I totally agree about Olivia Jordan. I get why she won that pageant, but I also found her very fake and annoying. Also, something about her lopsided open-mouth grin always reminds me of Jack Nicholson smashing down the door with an axe in The Shining. Another is Alyssa Campanella. I like her personality (she seems smart and cool) but physically she always seemed much too thin, even at Miss USA, and I was actually pretty dismayed that folks were holding her up as a standard of beauty. Fortunately, MUO seems to have moved away from the rail-thin body type after Olivia Culpo.

[> Subject: I will get crap for this but...Crystle Stewart. No doubt she was a model with the whole package but the face was lagging IMO. Her face looked pinched to me and looked like she got a LOT of work done. Don't know if she did or not. But I think I would have been more excited had Leah Laviano won.

[> Subject: I just never got Haleigh Stidham (AL 2006), and her hair at finals was just a frizzy mess. Never understood all the hype with Jessica Rafalowski (Florida 2008). I'll probably be banned from the board for life and stoned to death for this one, but I never understood the fascination with Beth Hood (TN 2003). Just seemed like a lot of smoke and mirrors, take away the smoky eye and killer dress, and she was just an attractive girl.

[> Subject: Nia Sanchez. Her high-pitched voice was such a turn-off to me, at USA and at Universe. I've forgiven the Nevada state capital thing, but when she spoke, total cringe. Her placement at Universe, IMHO, was way to generous. I did not have her or Colombia in my Top Ten that year. Her saving grace to me, she gave great big hair. I love big hair!

We all know the success rate from muo to America is an uphill battle. I think even in IMG's era the muo ladies are going to have a hard time cracking that system. Only one I can think of that may be successful would be Kira ( USA '17)
