Subject: Can you name a favorite pageant, winner, contestant, venue, stage setting, etc? I want hear from everyone, but especially those who watched pageants from the 1960ís forward. I will start: Most simple and most grand setting: MU 1973, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. Yours?

[> Subject: I also loved MU 1973. What a beautiful venue for a pageant. My favorite stage settings were MU 1975 in El Salvador and in 1988 in Taipei. The sets were huge and contestants at all different levels of staging. My favorite contestant was Miss Haiti 1975 and first runner up. She was so exotic and I had hoped she would be the first Black Miss Universe. My favorite winners of all time are Maritza Sayalero MU 79, Porntip N. MU 88, and Sushmita Sen MU 94. My favorite evening gown competition was MU 1982 in Lima. It was so elegant and glamorous and Canada first one out was perfect. My over all favorite pageant was MU 1977 in Santo Domingo. It was a perfect pageant, from the opening, the stage and set design, the music and the coronation of Janelle. I have so many more favorites, but, these stand out for me at this moment.

[> Subject: Favorite pageant - Miss Universe 1999. Loved how festive the opening was. Favorite winner - Brook Lee, hands down. I just love her. Favorite contestant - Kurara Chibana. Loved her name and loved her performance. Favoritie venue - Any MU venue that is not in the US. Favorite stage setting - 90s: MU99 in Trinidad and Tobago. Very colourful. No reliance on huge display screens but on actual beautiful props; 00s - MU04 in Panama. Very minimal design. Loved the touch of the gold banana leaves that moved during the opening and evening gown. 10's - MU18 in Bangkok. While there was heavy use of LED screens, I appreciate that they gave us a different type of stage setup.

[> Subject: Bangkok and Mexico City always give great stages and productions. From the huge arenas to the the authentic infusion of their culture and artistry. 1993 (except for the booing) was my all-time favorite for really "feeling" the host country until 2018 when it was all about Thailand despite productions by then being way over digitalized and looking like they could be anywhere.

For all their hype, the Filipino-hosted pageants are boring and never really showcase their culture or artistry.

[> [> Subject: 2018 wasn't horrible. The stage, music were supurb. But you are right they have relied on lcd screens the last 7 or so years. It's cheap I understand but at least put money in to the stage. Atlanta was horrible. But I thought given the space issues, the gown competition was hands down one of my favorites every. But I am partial to any thing that uses selena.

[> Subject: My favorite opening was 1977 and the reigning riding in a horse-drawn carriage with children singing and following along until she reached the pageant hall. All these years later and nothing even comes close.
