Subject: The age limit is definitely a factor. Also, the way MAO local and state calendars are set up. If an outgoing USA state holder crowns her successor in late Fall or early winter, she will need to immediately compete at a local MAO program in order to qualify for the state finals in the summer. This can be difficult because many competitive MAO states have most of their local titleholders crowned by early in the new year, thereby offering few opportunities. If a prospective candidate misses the local deadlines, she will have to wait another year to compete in the MAO system, thus, losing another year of eligibility.

[> Subject: Many MUO titleholders and participants will freely tell you that they donít compete in the MAO program because they lack a performing arts talent, i.e., singing, dancing, instrumentalist, etc. However, through the decades, former contestants have showcase different types of performing arts or athletic talents. I would have loved to have seen Brook Lee dance the hula, Oliva Culpo play the cello, Shanna Moakler roller skate, Chelsi Smith sing or Rima Fakih pole dance on the Miss America stage. I would have never thought a science experiment would be labeled talent, yet that won Camille Miss America.
