Subject: Excluding the Miss USA’s that did not make the cut and the Miss USA’s that became Miss Universe, who do you think gave the best and worst performance at Miss Universe from the rest? For me, the best was a toss-up between Hayek, Finnessey, and Sanchez, but I’ll select Shandi as she carried herself well and was genuinely excited for Jennifer. For the worst, it’s between Shanley and Marketic, but I’ll go with Mai because of her attitude when she was selected as a SF and her interview. Yours?

[> Subject: I agree with all your picks. Add to the best performance list, Ali Landry and Shawn Weatherly. Would also put Crystle Stewart in if she didn't have the fall. As for the worst, I liked Shannon Marketic when she won USA, but she seemed dead and uninterested at Universe like she was done with her reign. Add Kelli McCarty to the worst list. I never got how she made it so far, let alone making top 10 that year looking like Edna DeFazio from Laverne and Shirley

Honorable mention would be Kenya Moore, who did a great job handling all the booing from the hostile crowd

[> Subject: Just since 2000... I remember thinking in 2014 that Nia was the one contestant who was always "on" at Miss Universe and always looked great from the moment she arrived to the moment the winner was announced. Shandi also did everything right, and both could have easily won Miss Universe. As for the other extreme, I thought Chelsea Cooley was an okay winner at Miss USA (although she always seemed more MAO to me) but everything felt off at Miss Universe.

[> Subject: Let's take it back to the 90s. Carole Gist could do not wrong, she should have won in 1990 but I get Mona today. Kelli McCarthy is a slut. But I liked her better at Universe. Shannon in 1992 was out of place and looking at the 92 usa group had no business winning. Kenya did good in 93. Lu Parker always reminded me of a 50 year old pretty soccer mom. Her universe performance was fine but she looked old. Ali could have been top 3 but her top 6 question was dreadful. Shawnae did good but I'm still devastated Shauna didn't win.

[> [> [> Subject: lol amen to that! My mental picture of Lu is of her going down the line of judges and bowing her head and mouthing "thank you" to each one. As much as I totally got her win at USA, I always felt she fell in the category of Miss USA's who got a wild card spot in the semis at Universe for being "Miss USA"

[> [> [> Subject: If Lu represented Montana she would not have made the cut. She was military or cadet, she has a hard tough exterior. I think what won her the crown was the Sharon Faulkner story which was also 1994. She was able to connect her story. Like Deshauna in 2016 who had no business making the cut. Lu at Universe was out of place. And she gained about 50lbs by 1995. Thank you, thank you.. Omg it was horrible. Pat should have won and likely would have been top 3 at Universe.

I wish I could watch the shows from the 50s so I could see them. The girls i was disappointed with were Castillo, Gibbs ( I didn’t see any growth from nationals), Kim S, Mai.

[> [> [> Subject: But that would have been like asking Michaelangelo to reproduce a better Sistine Chapel ceiling or David statue LOL. Courtney Gibbs was perfection at both pageants. Excluding Courtney from that kennel club top five in Taiwan is still one of the most biased, WTF judging decisions I've ever seen.

[> [> [> [> Subject: LOL yeah i see your point as Courtney Gibbs was perfect the way she was and definitely shoud've been in the top 5 at Universe. Thailand and Korea both deserved to be in the 5 but Hong Kong & Japan over Courtney, I don't think so. Courtney's only flaw was when said "don't say no to drugs", which she corrected right away. At least Japan was somewhat endearing in the interview with her memories of garage sales, but Hong Kong and her adoration for Eddie Murphy I just never got (and she even made the cut at Miss World)

[> [> Subject: Jones and Anderson were great at Universe, but their final answers were weak. Amanda's answer was weak compared to her response at USA and Judi's response threw me because I thought she would speak about the US and not Hawaii even though that's where she was from. Julie was destined to be 1RU as Lorraine was so sweet.

[> Subject: Christy Fichtner seemed to go from best to even better in 1986. Terri Utley went from all right to pffft in 1982. Mary Therese Friel went from bad to worse in 1979. I have to disagree about Mai Shanley mentioned in the header of this post. That was not attitude. That "fist bump" was pride in being New Mexican (our first and only win) and being an American making it into the Top 10 as the "hometown" rep.

[> [> [> Subject: When A Campanella and E Brady won I was literally crying that's how happy I was. They both were fantastic at Nationals. Then when Universe rolled around I was also literally crying when I saw what the Miss USA people put them into in terms of gowns. Especially Alyssa- not only did she look pencil-thin, her gown looked like she got it at some kind of second hand shop. Then they made poor Erin (who looked totally different) look like a pinball machine in costume, then put her in a very trite, pedestrian gown.
