Subject: Your favorite MUO crowning?

Mine is an oldie but goodie: Miss Universe 1998.

It has everything...

- A gracious farewell from Brook Lee.
- The ditsy Joyce Giraud named as 2nd runner up.
- Miss Venezuela, Veruska Ramirez, looking like she was about to throw up.
- Wendy Fitzwilliam, one of my favorite titleholders ever.
- Massive approval from the other contestants, including Miss Ghana who immediately tackled Wendy and nearly dragged everyone to the ground.
- Brook Lee trying to restore order and get the crown on Wendy's head.

Still love this 20+ years later.

What's your favorite MUO crowning?

[> Subject: Before I knew anything about wigs/weaves/attachments/and so on, I was somewhat shocked how Brook Lee gave her farewell wearing a bun, then after the crowning, off to the side, you see her running her hands through short hair! I didn't get it and thought her farewell had to be taped. Obviously not. Later, I read she cut her hair during the final telecast that night. To answer the question, Maritza crowning Shawn is my favorite. Both being roommates in NYC prior to Miss Universe 1980, the emotion between roommates/friends, was real.

[> Subject: Miss USA 1980. That Beloxi audience was in a frenzy once it was down to SC and AZ. And the audience reaction to Shawn's win...they knew they were watching a future MU being crowned.

[> Subject: You hit the nail on the head, Doot! This crowning was spectacular! Leave it to a Miss Venezuela to stay on her 7" heels even after getting zambonied by Miss Ghana. I think the reason Veruska looked so emotional is because of her Cinderella story. I believe she was orphaned at a very young age and grew up very poor. Marena Bencomo randomly saw Veruska one day during her reign and urged her to apply for Miss Venezuela due to her height. Veruska ended up beating heavy favorites for the national title in a most unexpected win. My next favorite crowning was in 2001. Yes, the whole damn show was rigged. But I will never forget the intensifying roar of the crowd as Miss Venezuela (Eva Ekvall) and Miss USA (Kandace Krueger) were announced as 3rd and 2nd RU, respectively. We all knew what was coming but the energy in the building that night was crazy. No need for MUO's canned applause! lol

[> [> Subject: I love this entire comment. It was evident Wendy was very well loved by all of her peers. In fact, I think even Venz was loved too, and she was so gracious fighting through everyone to give Wendy a real hug before she walked the stage. That was definitely one of my favorite eras. I know Brook Lee would be hard to top, but to me she was equally as awesome. Any of the top 5 would have been deserving. I love those kind of years!

[> Subject: 1998 was always my favorite crowning too for the exact reasons that you listed. Always loved MU 1989 Angela Visser's puzzled look reaction when she was named the winner and it almost looked like Porntip pushed the crown down hard on her head by the expression Angela makes. Another good one was Miss Teen 1987 Kristi Lynn Addis, aside from her huge helmet hair, but her reaction was priceless. 2002 Miss Teen since Vanessa Semrow came out of nowhere and won the whole thing. You can tell all the contestants were happy about her win. A non MUO crowning which I also loved was when Debbye Turner was crowned Miss America 1990. The whole moment was climatic, especially when Virginia Cha and Debbye Turner are named as the final 2.

[> [> Subject: Yes, My favorite part was Virgina Cha was called into the final two and she looks shocked and stiff while walking center stage and then Debbye Turner is called and next shot is Miss Oklahoma hugging Debbye and then the Miss Pennsylvania who looked like Blanche Devereaux comes out of nowhere and plows into Debbye for a hug and add the climactic music playing in the background. Such a dramatic and emotional moment!

[> [> [> [> [> [> Subject: When I attend Miss Universe 1996 in Vegas where Bolocco judged, she had guards or something pushing people (me included) out of her way when she entered the theater. Soured my thoughts of her. Meanwhile, Lupita Jones came in alone without any fanfare or bruhaha (I walked in right behind her).
