Who are some of your favorite contestants who did not make the semi-finals (i.e., Top 16 or whatever) at Miss USA?

For me, there are three recent ones that come to mind...

2018 - Alabama - Hannah Brown
2016 - Wisconsin - Kate Redeker
2015 - California - Natasha Martinez

Lately, MUO has been giving a list of topics to contestants so they have some idea what the on-stage questions might be about.

Has anyone seen the list or does anyone know how general or specific it is? I'm curious about this.

In any case, I think this is a good idea. The quality of the answers has generally been better the past few years. After Miss USA 2015, I was feeling pretty discouraged by the responses and I think the new format is helping avoid the complete meltdowns and YouTube moments.

Dani Walker (Miss MT 2018) just posted a video of her experience at Miss Universe in Thailand. It's a fun video. You can see what the venue looked like inside and outside and what was going on during commercial breaks.

A few observations...

- Dani Walker looks great here, and so do the other Miss USA contestants that she is hanging out with, especially Regina Gray (Wisconsin). I wasn't crazy about their styling at Miss USA. It was too over-the-top, but they look fabulous here with the "smaller hair" in this video.

- The video footage from the balcony shows some stuff that was not on TV, like how much Nepal struggled with her gown, especially as she was exiting the stage and Canada was coming toward her with that giant street sweeper.

- You can see Sarah Summers meeting her friends and family just after the pageant.

Subject: Eras of Miss USA

Doot

So this is how I think of the history of Miss USA. It is not necessarily related to the changing ownership or broadcast networks or anything. It's just how I tend to view the different periods. I'd be curious to know what others think.

Ancient History: 1952 to 1969
This is before I started watching, so I don't have much connection to these titleholders.

The Early Days: 1970 to 1979
The first pageant I can remember watching was 1970 (Debbie Shelton). I feel like the 70s had some ups and downs. There were some great titleholders (e.g., Debbie Shelton) but mostly it seems like a not-so-good decade.

The Golden Age: 1980 to 1997
This was a long period bookended by Miss Universe winners. I feel like the pageant hit its stride in this era and also became more diverse (the first Latina, African American, and Asian winners). There were a few winners that I didn't get at all, but overall these were good years. This period includes the 5 Texas aces.

Transition Years: 1998 to 2002
I think MUO was trying to figure out what Miss USA should be like and what the pageant should be like. For a while, they tried "plain and simple" (along the lines of Miss America... awful!) and some of the pageants themselves were terrible, especially 2001.

The Modern Era: 2003 to 2015, 2018
These are the years that seem like Miss USA as we know it today. Lots of great winners, although there was a period where I feel they rewarded bodies that were way too thin. But overall, I like these titleholders.

The Asterisk Years: 2016, 2017
I think of both of these years as an aberration, when they were much more interested in "stories" than anything else. This is nothing against Deshauna or Kara; it just felt like things were out of kilter those two years. At the most recent pageant it seemed like they found a better balance once again.

I thought it might be fun to deconstruct this crowning moment. Please add you own comments or do the same for a different year!

0:03 Yoinks, it seems even weirder to see this man in the audience now.

0:38 I do not miss Jeannie Mai and her mindless clapfart "commentary." I'm so glad they have replaced her.

1:00 You can hear the boos when Jamaica was called as 4th runner up. I was surprised too. At this point I was expecting her to finish at least in the top two.

1:10 Netherlands and USA seem to have a bit of a moment about whether or not to hold hands. I felt bad for Nia in that awkward instant.

1:29 I was surprised Netherlands went that far. Also, notice that she did not want to take those flowers, LOL.

2:25 The way the light was shining on Colombia's dress, I thought for sure we were going to see her chimichanga.

2:47 Colombia wins. Although she was probably the favorite before the pageant (I remember that I predicted she would win), this felt like a disappointment because the way the pageant had gone up till then it seemed like they were going to reward a different kind of beauty, like Jamaica. Oh well...

Remember back in the day when MUO would commission special music for the pageants? The opening numbers for Miss Universe often had special songs written to match the locale (and some of these got stuck in my head for years) and Miss USA also had its own music at various periods.

One of my favorites was the music they used after the crownings in the late 90s. You can hear it at the end of the clip of Brook Lee's crowning.

Kimberly Pressler
Shauntay Hinton
Rima Fakih
Deshauna Barber*

Although I thought Deshauna had a terrific resume and story to tell, I felt Miss Hawaii would have been a more deserving choice.

Miss USA Sarah Rose Summers has a sunny outlook on her future.

The 24-year-old beauty queen from Nebraska is engaged to her longtime boyfriend, Connor Combs, who proposed the same night she moved on to the semi-finals of the Miss Universe pageant in Thailand, on Dec. 17.

“I knew Thailand would change my life, but what I did not realize was that it would also be where I begin a new lifelong journey,” she shared on Instagram, captioning a photo with Combs.

“On Dec 17, not only did I represent my country on an international stage, but I also said yes to forever with my best friend. I cannot stop hugging on my fiancé, staring at my ring, and smiling thinking about it. NY POST

1. I would like to dispense with the selection of finalist by region. It's the reason why I hated affirmative action in education. The best and only the best should be finalist, not from where they live.

2. I would enjoy Top 20. Top 10, and then Top 5. Q&A followed by 4th,3rd,2nd,1st runners up and winner.

3. I think Steve Harvey has run it's course. Time for someone new. Any suggestions? I always thought Ryan Seacrest would be very good.

4. 3 hours is to long. 2-2 1/2 hrs. max.

5. A more diverse international panel of judges for prelim. and finals.
