...well, that was a rather stupid and insensitive thing for someone to have said, but I do see their point. It's not just the passing of time that's made Nick Drake the hero of so many thousands of late-comers around the world. The tragedy of his story brings in a lotta folks who maybe wouldn't have had a look-in otherwise. Like, uh, US!

Fred Neil's work stands up on it's own, of course, WITHOUT the need for tragedy. But I do think that the thuggish person who made that unnecessary crack was, unfortunately, RIGHT--if Fred had left us 25 or 30 or even 35 years ago, he would be much more of a legend than he is. Too bad about that.

We should all be happy that our Monks never became "that kind" of legend. They did it the OTHER way--by just vanishing for 30 years. Much better!
