Subject: From Chuck Eddy's book

From "The 100 Best Heavy Metal Albums of the '90s" (all parenthetical statements are Eddy's; further, it's pretty cool considering the album was recorded in '66):

"Black Monk Time" (Infinite Zero/American, 1997; rec. 1965-67)

Anti-atomic-bomb U.S. Army artillery soldiers on leave from the Geinhausen base outside Frankfurt and playing for pfennigs from gasthauses, the Monks wore all black and shaved square-shaped bald spots on their noggins to resemble wax statues. They originally considered the names
Molten Lead and Heavy Shoes (how heavy metal can you get?!!), then commenced chanting crazed beat-poetry monologues about "people cry! people die for you! people kill! people will for you!" and "it's beat time! it's
hop time! it's Monk time!" Inspired by the imaginary pre-historic funk of Mesopotamia to ineptly abuse all instruments as rhythm, their bizarre repitition and ability to be good in theory but somewhat tedious to listen to much surely influenced (less rocking) later Kraut-kuntry native
sons of the Faust/Can/Amon Duul school --- keys traverse down the scale and back to transmit "sarcasm," a banjo adds jigginess (most pronounced in the Holy Modal Rounded "Love Can Tame The Wild"), "Blast Off!" zooms like a rocket, and stripped-down ultraprimal hate stomps (one even
called "I Hate You") gradually louden Yardbirds fuzz into
assault-with-deadly-handgrenade distortion. Lyrics anticipate everything from "Pussy Galore's coming down and we like it" to Springsteen's brother at Khe Sahn
fighting off the Viet Cong. But Gary Burger edits his vocab into idiot-savantness so as not to confuse the Germans, and makes a point of burning out his certifiably insane tonsils before impaling you with the mikestand.
