My mom disciplined me and my two younger brothers until we were well into our teens. When I left home to move into an apartment, I was 19, but remember that mom would still come up to make sure that I had remembered to take out the trash, clean the stairs when it was my turn or just to get enough fruit and veg, (not just burgers!). She still punished me when it was needed on her weekly visits and spoke to my neighbours to find out if I was causing any problems or being polite to them. If she was told that they were unhappy with my behaviour or were cheeky to them, (which did happen quite a lot), she would sit me down and talk to me about the problem of living away from home and being responsible. She would explain that she did not expect me to behave well all the time and that she was still there to guide me in that first year away from home. I knew that mom would still spank me if she was not happy with what she was hearing from my neighbours and that happened quite alot in the first year. After getting a sore bottom I was expected to apologise to my neighbour for what I had said or done. I did eventually learn how to behave away from home but it only happened slowly and after lots of scoldings and many a good spanking across my mom's knee. I knew she was doing it for the best reasons and it helped me to grow up and become a little more independant. Not all teenagers may need discipline like I did but my mom knew that raising three boys on her own was no easy task.
