from CNN:

Plenty of music at Diddley's funeralStory Highlights
Friends and relatives spent four hours celebrating the guitarist's life

Music legend's generosity, warmth is remembered

Jerry Lee Lewis, Tom Petty among musicians who sent flowers

GAINESVILLE, Florida (AP) -- Bo Diddley's funeral Saturday rocked and rolled with as much energy as his music.

Ron Haughbrook, a bass player for Bo Diddley for 35 years, hugs Kelly Carter during the funeral Saturday.

For four hours, friends and relatives sang, danced and celebrated the life of the man who helped give birth to rock 'n' roll with a signature beat that influenced Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, the Rolling Stones and many others.

As family members passed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's casket, a gospel band played his namesake song. Within moments, the crowd of several hundred began clapping in time and shouting, "Hey, Bo Diddley!"

Diddley died of heart failure Monday at his home in nearby Archer.

"In 1955, he used to keep the crowds rocking and rolling way before Elvis Presley," Diddley's grandson, Garry Mitchell, said before kicking his legs sideways, high up in the air the way Diddley did onstage. Mourners cheered.

"I'm just telling it the way it is," Mitchell said.

Diddley, who was born Ellas Bates and became Ellas McDaniel when he took the last name of a cousin who raised him, was remembered for much more than his songs. Friends recounted his generosity, manifested in concerts for the homeless and work with youth groups and other charities, and the way he loved to talk to just about anybody he met.

Gainesville Mayor Pegeen Hanrahan referred to one of his most famous hits as she told the crowd, "When the question is asked, 'Who do you love?' it's you, Bo."

Eric Burdon, leader of the rock group the Animals, attended the service, and flowers were sent from musicians including Jerry Lee Lewis, Tom Petty, George Thorogood and others.

Burdon, also a member of the Rock Hall, called Diddley a big influence.

"I've been a fan of his since 16, 17 years of age. Probably one of the first records I ever owned," Burdon said, recalling that his attention was immediately grabbed when he saw an album cover with Diddley sitting on a scooter with a square guitar.

Burdon said he saw Diddley play last year at a concert in Australia, and even though he could tell his health wasn't great, Diddley put tremendous energy into the show.

He was known for his stage moves, which some presume influenced Presley.

"He's always been jumping around and very aggressive; if he was onstage with the Stones, he was obviously putting Keith Richards in his place," Burdon said. In describing the "shave and a haircut, two bits" rhythm Diddley made famous, Burdon said, "I call it bone music, because it goes to your bone."

But stories of another side of Diddley were told repeatedly at the funeral. A man who loved God and his family, who would always stop to talk in the grocery store and was always smiling.

His brother, the Rev. Kenneth Haynes of Biloxi, Miss., said Diddley always asked how he could help and what he could give.

"There was one thing he wouldn't give me. That's his hat," Haynes said, referring to the black hat the musician was also known for.

But Haynes said his brother grew weary of life on the road.

" 'But this is what God gave me to feed my family,' " Haynes recalled Diddley saying. " 'I have to keep doing it until God says it's enough.' "

Diddley was born in McComb, Mississippi. He moved to rural Archer in the early 1980s and had a recording studio on his 76 acres. Mitchell joked that Diddley got up so early, he would tap the roosters on the shoulder to wake them up. And he always sang at breakfast.

Diddley's friend Roosevelt Hutchinson described how the musician would wrap meat in several layers of foil, bury it and light a fire on top to cook it. Once the fire was lit, he would grab his guitar.

"He just enjoyed playing that thing under those trees," Hutchinson said.

But he enjoyed his family even more, friends said. He had four children, 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

"Please know this, because I know Diddley," the guitarist's business manager, Faith Fusillo, told his family. "As much as you loved him, he loved you more."

They sure do! We're getting great thunderstorms lately, not the wimpy things of the past.

Hide your children, mommas. Bo has connected with a major source of energy, and he's not known for diddling around when that happens.

While we await stories and updates, I can tell you of something else to await.

That's the 2009 VW Jetta TDI with blutec engine technology. The Smart is a disappointment. My 1995 Acura Integra gets better mileage, while still having room for two people, three guitars, and an amplifier.

VW, though, if they ever deliver, are promising 45mpg city and 57 highway. That bests most of the hybrids on the highway, where most people drive, and for about half the initial cost.

Diesel costs more than gas, but the Jetta should be priced around 18K, and diesels last about forever with minimal maintenance.

One of these days, the trucking industry is going to switch to #2 heating oil no matter what the gov't does, and stop paying the $1/gal penalty for the food coloring that differentiates the two. At that point, diesel will cost less than gas, as tradition dictates, and the TDI will be the car of choice for all new stories on the Internet.

Excepting those by Lugnutz and Driver, of course.

I heard the TDI was already getting 40+ mpg. But with the current cost of diesel fuel, it's almost a wash with a gas car mileage wise. I'll stick to my lil truck. It gets 23 mpg on average.

BTW Driver, you have two different feedback addys listed on your Quarry tales chapters. Which one is it? I sent a couple notes on things to one and haven't gotten a response. You can let me know by way of my addy on my name.

Gracias!

those stories are from 1955, as are the obsolete addresses. My fault - I never told dabeagle to stip that off.

No problem. I was reading Rafe's story and thought something looked familer. It was Alex and Jason that reminded my of a story by Dan called Growing pains. Was curious if this was payback from when he used your characters from Falling off a log in Growing pains. It came to me about the timeline difference and seen you noted that on the next Quarry tales chapter.

Seeing this is the only place where I can ask you things or just give a attaboy, so be it.

BTW II, the mileage on the TDI sucks if it's only mid 20's.

You have a good memory. Yes, I borrowed Jason and Alex from Dan (who was my editor for the first edition of quarry), and they first showed up in the last chapter of that story.

45 city, 57 hwy. My truck is a diesel. Three weeks ago diesel cost a buck more than gas, now it's about 60 cents more. That's a 15% premium. 57 mpg is a whopping 80% better than a 32mpg Smart

I have a good memory where it counts. The most inane crap from decades ago to stories I've read, but I can't remember what I had for breakfast today........

Diesel used to be even with reg gas a year or two ago but I see that changed, for the worse.

Holy Smokes, the date on the files I have is 2002. They are remarkably unaffected by the passage of time. I love those stories. I remember waiting anxiously for each chapter to appear.

BTW.. Speaking of Waiting. Am I allowed to ask if there will be any more to "A Horse Named Phil?"

Hopefully,

I think I had a Hillary moment when I said 1955. Either that or it was a gross typo. 2000-2001 is more like it.

I don't think it's appropriate to talk about stories here when they aren't posted here. It irks me to no end when people do it to me, so I sure won't do it to myself.

The answer you seek is, or should be by now, posted on the same site with the story, which is crvboy.

Just for the record, I asked crvboy if he would mind before I told dabeagle to go ahead and post the original version of quarry tales, so it's here with crvboy's gracious blessing.

The Jetta sounds interesting, though I would probably go for this model:

I vaguely remember during the 80's a Rabbit diesel. Would the Jetta engine likely be better.

>I vaguely remember during the 80's a Rabbit diesel.
>Would the Jetta engine likely be better.

Way better, and it would be better yet if VW offers it in a Rabbit.

First, it's 50 state compliant win emissions rules, which only Mercedes has accomplished so far this year.

VW had a Jetta diesel since they had the Jetta, but it was a lowly 70hp thing that made 40 mpg on the EPAs old test. The new specs push everyone back by varying percentages, but the old VW diesel would probably score 32-35 mpg today.

The Jetta hasn't had a diesel since the car was redesigned a couple of years ago. so the new diesel is much anticipated. The base engine doubles the old 70hp to 140 while nearly doubling the mileage, and there is an upgrade in Germany to 170hp that doesn't hurt the mileage by much.

I just saw a test of the Smart on CNN earlier, and they believed Mercedes bogus claim of 40 mpg highway. Real world tests show 32, which is no reason to give up anything for a not-cheap car, whose only real-world merit is you can park it sideways.

I go for the 57 hwy in the Jetta, which might translate to 65 or 70 in the smaller Golf.

I commute 80 miles a day round-trip, so I'm biased to good mileage. My antedeluvian Acura gives me 35.2 which is still better than the Smart.

I'm broken hearted. Bo Diddley has died. If you don't know Bo, then you don't know Diddley.

I wasn't even born when he came on the scene, but Bo was a favorite of my father's from his first release, and I grew up hearing his music, along with that of a lot of the other old blues merchants.

Bo Diddly, pretty much single-handedly, made rock and roll a guitar-based genre. Yeah, there were other guitar greats of that era, but they were playing piano music on their guitars, not something completely unique to the electric guitar.

Bo understood and used the power of the electric guitar like nobody before him, and it's that single power that has fueled rock since.

It's pretty simple, but Bo learned that if you turn your amp up and chunk the strings, you make a powerful sound. Chunk those strings to a solid rhythm, and you can make that guitar sound as compelling amd dangerous as a fast freight headed right at you.

That was the sound that gave rock a foundation. It was its own thing, not something else: not like country or blues or swing played faster.

Bo Diddley has to be the most copied musician of all time. Absolutely every rock band, from the Stones to Steve Miller, to Avril Lavigne uses the Diddley sound a lot, and he's very often cited as an influence.

That's as it should be, because Bo gave millions and millions of hopeful guitar players the nerve to say, "I don't care what momma don't like. I'm gonna rock this place all night!"

My favorite line from a song?

"You got your radio tuned down too low. TURN IT UP!"

My kind of guy.

In the unlikely event that someone doesn't know what you're talking about, here's a pic of one that's up on e-bay. The silver one is rare, most are red or black, but this one has all the hardware, where the newer ones are pretty much strippers.

(That has to be the longest link I ever saw)

The listing made me think to check the Gretsch site, and they have a nice testament to Bo Diddley, and some decent clips from you-tube.

Two things!
One, yes there is another old friend who is sending me a ton of material to post, and two is a bit of a gamble.

I plan to start a round robin story, one that others may jump in and write chapters to. I plan to place it on another, linked website. This will be set in the time of the Medici, in Italy. I expect lots of treachery, plotting and sneaking around. Sharpen your pencils, it might be fun!

Oh, I saw it. Couldn't you post-date it by a century or so? Then you could have the Borgias running amok in the days when Popes had evil sons and daughters.

It could be tough, as I don't know how many know their Renaissance history well enough to pull off a novel.

OK, I agree to the issues presented, this would be a pain in the ass. Slight change. I'm going to write the initial chapter, creating a line of Medici in present day, allowing more folks the ability to jump in and create drama.

Also, php board is coming real soon. As well as an ego page where I post my newly completed Telechrons.

Also...cross your fingers for me. Outside of a few trusted folks, a story no one knows about has been submitted for publication. It's a small story, submitted for an anthology. It's always been a pipe dream of mine to be published in some form, and it's also something my father believe d would happen for me, so I'm hopeful. But if it doesn't work out, you'll see it here shortly afterward.

What else is coming soon? I have new chapters I hope to have in place this weekend as well as a new messageboard. I am also working on sequals to existing storylines as well as some new ones.

Talk to you soon!

The Magical Mystery Bus: A Story Set To The Music of the Beatles. Yes. That will do nicely. Get right on it. It's the story of 17 year old Kieran, an Irish boy who's just got his license and has come to American to explore. He meets Declan, an American of Irish descent and then.....

It's the story of 17 year old Kieran, an Irish boy
>who's just got his license and has come to American to
>explore. He meets Declan, an American of Irish descent
>and then.....

Kieran will be happier if he meets Guido Medici, an American of Italian descent, and gets to tool around in a Maserati.

Who knows? Kieran is Irish. When Guido tires of him, Kieran might be happy to meet Janos Kravkowski, an American of Polish descent, and tool around in his Trabant, which is illegal in all 50 states (even Texas) for its polluting ways.

When the Medici story ends, will you please continue with the Kravkowski saga? I'm sure it's quite compelling, and I've just given you the obvious segue.

Thank you for your support.

A Lambo?!? I've been in a couple of Countach's. Once you pour yourself in it, it feels like a coffin. The Ferrari Testarrosa is much nicer in comparison. I'll stick to domestic stuff for the most part.

I'm debating on sending Dave the 10 chapters of my story as it was written a few years ago. Can't seem to work up the time to finish the re-write on it, so in the mean time this will give Driver something to critique.......

Wacha think?

I'm no critic, and certainly not a critique-er You write, I read, no rules. Punct and gram the way you like; I'll never complain.

On cars, a few years ago I was on the Island of Rhodes, and my rental car was an old Fiat Topolino, a tiny, underpowered tin can, but perfect for the narrow roads and alleys there. It had a cloth roof that you pulled back by hand, and the windows didn't roll down, even in the doors.

I didn't know that, and when pulling into the pay lot at the harbor one night, a nice guy leaving held his paid ticket out to me. I couldn't roll the window down, and he was too close too open the door, so I pulled the roof back and stood up.

That caused much hilarity, but free parking was worth it. When we went back to Athens, I rented a fancy Peugeot, and was treated with respect and dignity. I didn't get any more free parking, though.

That goes to show something, and you all can figure out what it is.

Ok, so here's the update!

I have posted 6&7 of Turbulence, a great story imo. Also I have other treats as well. I chose not to post the story I was working on at this time because, after editing and reading it sober, I didn't like it. The ideas were much rougher and didn't come together the way I'd have liked. So it will need extensive reworking. Also we will be moving to a php board once I figure it all out. Will keep you posted there.

In the meantime, enjoy what we have and there is More To Come!

One of the things I hate about this board is it never recognizes me when I want to edit my post. So what else did I do, without letting the smoke out?

Added a Flag for Maine to our readership!
Removed links for The Jaded Edge and Ehman Penn. Jaded Edge seems to have stopped updating and Ehman's site is gone. We did add, however, a link to Awesomedude.com, see if you can find it. Meow.

On our Cool Lonks page I had to drop Matt Shepard as it has ceased working. I also did away with Draco Malfoy's personal site. I repointed the Jake Rocks! link to their MySpace as their site seems to have disappeared. In addition, I added a link to News of the Weird and Telechron.net, two places I spend a lot of time.

Removed a duplicate link from Baysville 9.

Also I updated the All About Dabeagle page with some more recent questions and insights.

Got rid of a pic on the America page.

I spent alot of time on the Tales From The Quarry page. I tried to use another page as an example, and it gave me fits. It still doesn't look like I'd prefer, but it does at least work.

I am missing Chapter 6! If anyone sees this, or indeed Driver himself, please send it along!

Look closely. It's more complete than you might think.

And I have only come to call here. It's a nice, friendly place to hang out.

Where's your contribution to the party, btw? Now that Quantum has finished, you have the only car story going.

Happy birthday to the DogHouse and thank you for the update Dave. I like it when websites have a birthday because they give presents to us. And "Title Chapter" was a mighty fine present; like a surprise phone call from a long-time friend. A voice you recognize instantly that brings forth a flood of great memories.

Thank you to all who made it possible!

Okay, I'll have to look at 'Turbulence'. Funny, but the little I read in this genre is what is recommended by dabeagle and only a couple of others.

If I can recommend a story here, it's 'Tyler's Dance' by Bryan Centers. Very sweet and well told.

Keep it up, Mr. Dabeagle. This board will self-ignite soon enough.

Saturday afternoon we lost cable and internet. Not sure exactly when, I was watching Boston Legal on DVD. What I can tell you is the cable company ran a new line from the pole to the house because the squirrels destroyed part of the cable.

So, trying to post tonight.

Okay, since everyone is maintaining a polite silence, let me be the one to ask.

What day does Sunday fall on in beagle time? My bedtime approaches, and there is nothing new here. Did you actually manage to break the site?

It's probably simpler: You had an offer you couldn't refuse, or a burst of inspiration for a great new story? Something simpler like a marrow bone? Ice cream?

All things are understandable ... except silence.

I thought there might be a big change here to kick off the 8th year, but nada. What gives? Surely more than four people have found entertainment here over the years?

This forum was once one of the hottest going. Come on people, say something!

Well, I should shut up or say something myself, no?

I cut my teeth as a storyteller right here, with dabeagle as my measuring stick. as well as my mentor and champion. As a story teller, he can best me with one hand behind his back.

Storytelling isn't my day job, though; it's kind of like cracking my knuckles when my mother said it would make them huge. It annoyed her and pleased me, and I find that telling stories gives me the same kick.

I know that I'm no writer, and I cringe at the word author. I'll never be either, and I don't want to be. I don't compare myself to writers or authors either, because I am what I am

That frees me from all the rules that cover writing and publishing. Who on Earth ever had the gall to write 'rules' for writing to begin with?

Publishing I can understand has rules, becaues that's business, but are there 'rules' for painting, for poetry, for photography? I don't think so. Actually, it's often the people who break all the 'rules' who achieve the most success in artistic endeavors.

I tell my Internet stories just the way I toss the bull with friends, and that shouldn't invite either questions or discussion. I like to mess with words and word meanings, spell things better than any dictionary, and say cheeseburg when cheeseburger doesn't sound right. Once it's out, there's no second chance. It's over, and you can react the way you will, but that's a personal reaction, and not worthy of public review.

That's all.

Bring it on, dabeagle!

Oh Dear Driver, you're gonna make me aren't you?

Set your 'Wayback Machine' for 2001. At this time I was already online friends with Driver, and as time progressed a few other characters who all enjoyed story-telling of one sort or another. Driver was at the time working on a Tome entitled 'The Quarry'. Now I will grant that perhaps one of the hooks for this story was that it was found on Nifty, and as a Rose on a dungheap, stood out. So I recruited him to post here.

The point is that it's irrelevant if Driver thinks himself an author, storyteller, yarn constructor or a fish story technician, he's entertaining and seems to connect us to people we feel we might know.

Also, as long time folks know, you only get here by invitation. Now I also grant that I have sent good stories on their way, and good authors. Driver has always been one of those I keep coming back to, one I encourage partly because I think it helps anyone to be encouraged but also because it's fun to read what he comes up with. It's so damn normal, it's so ineffably original in his portrayal of everyday folks doing everyday things, with his own unique (occasionally twisted) take on things.

Now, as to a site party or something...it's coming. I have recently recieved permission for some of my favoite things to come here, and am readying them, along with at least three new chapters of other things not mine, and I have something new from myself that I am frantically trying to polish up. ( I know, I know you can't polish a turd) so, SUNDAY!

Sunday will be the big post. I will try not to break the site in the meantime, but this project requires me to make new pages (shudder) and I'm trying to to screw it up. SO yes, big post, coming Sunday, get your reading glasses out...

Start spreading the news...like a bad penny...that 'family' you're forced to interact with on occasion...the company who doesn't realize it's long past time for them to go...or those nasty dead things that talk to littel girls through TV sets...

WEEEERRREE BAAAAAccckkk!

Oh dear, I forgot.

Driver, thank you for trying to light a fire here. I'm grateful we still have a faithful few that check in, as undeserved as I may be of them at this point. Let's face it, I haven't written enough in recent memory to warrant checking for me, certainly. But I do appreciate it for the authors I host and for the stories that have stolidly continued, and always handed me chapters first. Melina Catts is one, and one of my favorite stories, 'The Enigma of Flatness' is another.

Here's to the future!

Hi folks,

I'm not much of a writer. I seldom send messages to authors, writers, scribblers or even hacks. Usually I only do it when I've been absolutely blown away by the writing. I remember writing to Driver just as he was shutting down Everyday Love. I have a folder in my "stories" folder labeled "Driver Nine." Does that tell you anything?

>This forum was once one of the hottest going. Come on
>people, say something!

I'll confess, I had almost gotten out of the habit of checking here. Every few months I'd check back and things would look the same. I'd check the forum, and no new entries.

Imagine my surprise a few months ago when things began to happen here again. And my joy to find that Driver was here. In my usual way, I started checking back more often. I'd read and enjoy the exchanges and track down stories mentioned because I trust the judgment of the people recommending them. I've always loved Dabeagle's Stories. I felt he had a good ear for picking other writer's stories.

It seems that few of the sites I once frequented are still viable. Nifty goes on, and if one is careful there are a few good stories there. It's like panning for gold, a lot of rock and gravel and a few shinny nuggets.

So. What's my point?

A couple of months ago Dabeagle said that the site is going to be revived. I've been coming back regularly because I really want to see that happen. The forum is somewhat active again which had given me hope. I'll be here Sunday to see the new stuff. You may not hear from me, but I want you to know that I'll be reading with great happiness.

So, Driver. This is what I'll say...

GO DABEAGLE!!!!!

So here's the short term deal. The site will continue for its, ahem, EIGHTH YEAR. Holy shit and pass the gravy. Over the next year I hope to be more active and return to regular posts, as evidenced by the more recent site activity.

What does this mean to you? Well, in order to keep us alive and active, tell folks the site is still here, and that we are posting. No visits equals no reason to be here.

As always, a nice email to comment on things or a MB post is always welcomed.

As to the MB, I am going to look into a php board again. We'll see.

In the meantime, please have fun, check back for updates and changes, and if you see something that belongs here, tell em where to go!

I gassed up today and it cost me forty dollars. A few weeks ago I would have choked on that amount to fill the car's tank, but this was for my lawn mower! Ouchy-ouch!

I was out and around today, and I heard more than worry from people about several things.

I have a pellet stove to heat our house, and I picked up a couple of tons for next winter at a good price. Other people were there for the sale, and they are, of course, happy that they chose a heating fuel with a reasonably stable price. Yes, pellets go up every year like most things, but in the 16 or 17 years that I've used pellet fuel, the price has gone up from $165/ton to the $245 I paid today.

The price of gas and pellets isn't the point of this. The same people I talked to about pellets see danger ahead, where I hadn't thought about it.

The rest of this is from my growlery, a Dickensian place to be when you are out of humor.

It's desperation they were talking about today. They think things will go from the odd gasoline thief to regular people taking up criminal measures to keep their families through the winter. They were suggesting that the guy at Agway keep a shotgun handy, the thought of which had the guy stunned.

I don't see where things are as bad in this country as the media portrays them. Fuel is high for sure, but there's no corn shortage owing to ethanol, no orange juice shortage, and no rice shortage. Sam's Club is rationing to 'only' 200 lbs per customer, per week? Oh, Dear! What shall I do?

If I tell my family we can only have about 28 lbs of rice a day (56 lbs cooked) there will surely be panic in this household. I alone can eat a quarter pound, and of course I eat 250 or so meals a day.

That's not entirely true, and thinking people should realize that. Where exactly is the shortage when anyone who wants to can buy 1600 rice portions (big ones) each week of the world? Can you spell Rupert Murdoch? How about Matt Drudge? Glen Beck, or Lou Dobbs?

I find food prices down or even from a few years ago. Dairy is certainly less, and most vegetables and fruits. Beef is up, but lamb, pork and poultry are down or unchanged.

The big deal with the economy right now is the secondary mortgage market, and that is made more criminal by the fact that it has happened before.

I wasn't old enough to vote when the so-called Savings and Loan crisis occured, but it is exactly the same thing that's happening today: mortgages badly conceived, badly written, and badly executed.

I do feel sad for the people who lose their homes, because they were basically lied to. I can say they should have known better, but that's not my place.

It's the LENDERS who should have known better, given the history of the S&Ls. It's the lenders who should pay this time, not the taxpayers. They have made their billions, or even trillions, so soak them this time around. Just this once?

Taxpayers, at the behest of Reagan, bailed the S&Ls to the tune of about 160 billion of taxpayer dollars.

That shouldn't happen a second time. The government has to regain and maintain oversight on the mortgage business, not give it a second bailout, and not subject the public
another failure twenty years hence.

Sorry, just talky tonight, and not leaving anything to respond to.

I agree with you, Driver; there shouldn't be a bailout for the mortgage situation.

The lenders deserve to reap what they have sown. "Mortgages badly conceived, badly written, and badly executed" equal foreclosures and losses to the lenders. Those who invested in mortgage-backed securities made poor investments and should face their losses too.

The homeowners loosing their homes wouldn't have had them to begin with if their loans had been properly handled (there would have been no loan). There are exceptions to this, naturally, but for the most part they should have known better. They gambled on extremely high house prices growing even more and that didn't happen. I feel sorry for them but it doesn't change the basic facts.

I was laid off eight weeks ago; fortunately my financial situation is much better than 14 years ago, when this last happened. My home is now paid for, I have no car loan, no dependants living with me and money in the bank; four big differences.

I hope all is well with those who visit the Doghouse and this forum.

The part that amazes me is that we bail out Wall Street, but the government turned their backs on the folks losing their homes. And no one says a thing. Unreal.

Sorry to hear about your layoff. Is this the kind where you wait to be called back, or where you start hunting for a new job? I know a lot of people in the construction trades, where layoffs come in cycles and sooner or later they're back at work. I also know people in tech and finance, and their layoffs are usually final.

I hope things work out for you.

Thanks for your good wishes, Driver.

I'm in a tech field and mine was final (closed the whole division). Unfortunately the field, very much in demand in the 70's & 80's, is now over populated and technology advances in the last 10 years enables a few to do the work of many. Being in a relatively rural area doesn't help either (I'm unwilling to relocate).

So I've begun in a new direction that hopefully will take care of things until I am ready to retire, and maybe beyond that time.

When I asked what's up with this story I didn't make myself clear at all.

What I meant was, "Where is it?" as in the rest of it?

One post three months ago? That makes you slower than me. and puts you on the same track as dabeagle himself.

Shake a leg, man, or at least shake up your keyboard.

There should be 3 prequel chapters posted currently. It's here and at Dudes. I'm currently doing a re-write on the main story, which was written a few years ago and is pretty raw. What do you expect from a new rookie mechanic that was dared to write? 101 in all it's entirety is posted at Deweywriter, but it's the first version, not the new re-written version, which in my opinion is alot better. There are the 3 prequel chapters and 10 chapters in the first book. Book 2 has 4 chapters in it thus far. Chapter 1 of book 1 is ready, but I'd like to get book one done before posting so there will be a schedule that will work and not keep people waiting.

Is that a long enough answer to a short question?

Neener neener......

Umm...... That should read "What do you expect from a professional mechanic that was dared to write?"

I'm far from a rookie.

Ah, there it is, then. Drop that tool for awhile, stop fooling around with it and do some writing. You will be surprised how much ahead you can get if that thing isn't always in your hand.

There is noise on another site about one of my stories, and people there are wondering why that would bother me.

Normally, it wouldnt, because I have nothing to do with that site, and have nothing posted there, and my one-time offer of a story was refused without comment.

The rub is this: if I'm not posted there, and not allowed to post there, then why is it legitimate for people I don't know, and have never heard of, to criticize my work as if it was hosted on that site, right beside their own works?

What would it be like to them if I found another obscure site, and posted book reviews of their own works, and they are not allowed to join?

Some writers claim they can't write without continuous praise, but I'm not one of them. Is that so hard to understand? I'm a happy person, content in real life, and I don't need stroking to write stories. I like telling stories, and there is nothing more to it.

It's been suggested on this particular site, that if I don't want my work torn to shreds by people I don't know, on sites I never heard of, I shouldn't post at all.

I could do that, but it's not my preference. They could shut their yaps, too.

I have no ego when it comes to my stories. I just tell them, get them out, and go on to the next. I don't need reinforcement, nor do I deserve damnation.

I am really and totally sick of getting flak for writing what I see as benign stories about life in my world.

If your life is worse, don't try to bring me down, because you won't.

Read my stories if you like, enjoy them if you do, and stop if you don't, but please don't take me to task on a site I know nothing of.

I know that some people like my stories and cheer me on, but the crvboy site is the place to do that, not here, and certainly not somewhere I'm not even allowed.

I thing I know of the site. At any rate, I thing alot of people just post links and updates to stories that they like and other people may want to read. Of course most of those are on different sites. It's nice to go to one of your haunts and find one of the stories you're following has been updated.

The rub comes when one of those threads starts a debate on what the writer was thinking/doing when that was written. Of course some of these can become heated. I try to stay out of those and send my comments directly to the author, if I can.

This post isn't meant to give you or anyone any flack, just stating the things I've seen.

Be well.

No flak inferred.

I don't have a complaint about recommendations or posting updates, or even discussion if I'm allowed to participate. What gripes me is that this particular site seems to delight in criticizing people who aren't posted there, and that is unique to my experience - I've never seen that elsewhere.

The site is insular in that it's by writers, for writers, and about writing. My stories aren't allowed there, and I'm not allowed there, so I think it takes a lot of audacity to criticize my work there, behind my back, where I have no voice because I'm not good enough to belong. That's not criticism enough?

I don't go to the site because I don't like the mean nature of the place. I was prompted by a friend to take a look recently, and I wish I hadn't.

And if you are the soul behind Mechanics 101, what's with that?

It's just a story that I started a few years ago. My first ever effort at writing anything. I was dared. I'd like to think of the story as my ideal relationship. Pure fiction with a bit of reality thrown in.

While checking story sites, I found some work by our own Beagle. For those of you who haven't seen these couple stories, here is the link to them. http://archerland.disbelieve.org/dabeagle.htm

I really liked "Logans Run" No, it's not a futuristic story with robots. What about having this stuff here?

I agree that Logan's Run is a great story. I think the reason for it being on Archerland and not here is that it was written as a gift to Archerland for a site birthday.

I'm pretty sure that Dave feels like I do: a gift, once given, is the property of the recipient. Posting it here years later would be very much akin to taking it back, and that wouldn't be playing nice.

Driver is correct, it was a gift. If Nick Archer decided it no longer belonged there, then I might post it just so it's around...but more interestingly, to me at any rate, is that Nick and I tried an experiment once. Feedback has always been a problem for me, I feed on it, it spurs me on and gives me ideas. I once wrote a few chapters under a different name to try and see if a new author got responses faster or more often than an 'established' author. The story is still on Nick's site, called Rainbow's End.

And that's your useless trivia for today :-)

I was going to mention that story too. Must've had a brain fart. I like it.

I need to get going with my story and re-write. Got one chapter ready but I want to get the rest of book one ready before posting. That way there isn't months between chapters.

The colors of Easter! How timely and at least I can make out the words now.

Someone who knows him should write to Eggman and have him take a look! Maybe he'll be inspired to rejoin the world.

Can this board have something like categories? That would be nice, because I don't just join in on everything, and I don't want to be all PC like most places demand.

There's no edge anymore, at least not anyplace I look. I do better reading letters to the editor at the Pleasant Pond News than on modern message boards, because the people in Pleasant Pond say what they think. All the time.

We need categories like "Why Plymouth is a heck of a name for a rock, but a car? It's a heck of a name for a rock"

By the same token, we could have one that goes, "Quantum is a great name for a story, a terrific name for a scientific theory, but a bad name for a wimpy five-cylinder car."

How about "Cars I want", and "Cars I wish I'd owned?"

There is always, "Why doesn't write more, faster, better, all of the above?"

This could be the place again, like it once was, where people felt free from PC, deliberately stepped on toes, and had a whale of a good time.

There's an election going on in the US, and it's down to three good candidates, two democrats and one republican. Each of them have qualities I find alluring, and each takes positions that I don't particularly agree with, but they're all credible, and hopefully far better than what we have now.

There are also new car announcements, which are viscerally more exciting than politics, but ... oh, Hell. They're more important than politics, too.

I want, in the worst way, a Cadillac CTS (the next letter should be huge, but I don't know how) V! < (capital V, that should be a foot tall at least. This car is IMPORTANT)

I can tell you that the CTS-V is glossy and gutsy, and it's just the AMERICAN car that my own father would have lusted after when I was a little boy, and the one I love as a bigger boy.

That's my ink. Anyone else?

I was a little boy before you were a little boy, so for me, a Cadillac isn't a Cadillac unless it's got fins. Like the one I imprinted on when I was 10 and saw it parked in my home town: metallic bronze 1956 El Dorado convertible. Took b/w snapshots of it, made my brother snap off this Kodachrome slide. Now that was a Cadillac!

Bah! 305HP and 2 tons to move? Cut the fins down to save weight, and add another 250HP and you have a CTS-V.

Ooh for the days when gas was nearly free, huh? Your 56 had a TWO speed automatic. The CTS-V has a six-speed stick. That's right, a Cadillac with a clutch pedal. You can option a 6-speed automatic, but why would you?

I found a 56 for sale: http://www.finecars.cc/en/detail/car/16461/index.html?no_cache=1

I do have to admit, it's kind of skanky looking! :)

I could buy the model run of CTS-Vs for what they're asking for, though, so you buy it. I won't hold it against you.

OK, you're more into performance; I was into styling. In fact, around that time (1956) I'd progressed from drawing Flash Gordon rocket ships to devising a whole line of fictitious cars. Top of the line was the Pac-Ply, a name you got by combining Packard and Plymouth. Y'see. Anyway, they all had gigantic fins, naturally. Wish I still had some of those drawings.

Anyway, that's why I love this site:

Sorry, I missed this the first time around.
I like looks as well as performance. A friend of mine (with a somewhat fatter wallet than my own) usually has a nice piece or two, though his daily beater is a Volvo. Still, in recent years I've driven his Caddy XLR roadster, a Ferarri F550, a '71 XKE, Lamborghini Murcielago, and I can't wait to get a drive in his latest, which is an Audi R8.

My friend is on Long Island, where owning such cars is common enough, but it's also impossible to stretch their legs there, so my drives are usually on the Merritt Pkwy up into Connecticut, or the Taconic Parkway up toward Albany and back. They are both great driving roads. They're busy during commuter hours, but fun enough in-between.

These are all beautiful cars, although also all finless in the modern interpretation.

I have to restart this computer.

I'm a little techno challenged, and moreso on the boards. I did have a PHP board which allowed such things, but there was a great deal of bellyaching over the registration process. I should note, for the record, while such processes annoy me as well, after running a board for my old guild I found that there are a surprising number of bots and other damnable annoyances that post alot of things, such as links to porn with alot of pics, or whatnot. So it actually is a good way to keep out the riffraff.

Et tu Driver, Et Tu? Lack of power was only a concern really for the automatics, and having owned and loved three Quantums dearly, I can say the manual was a handsome beast.

It really can't be much worse. Did you hear that Obama is being likened to the Anti-Christ as per Nostradamus's predictions? Amazing.

Have a hard time selling me on an american car, unfortunately. Although i do try to buy american in other facets, this is one I just don't see anytime soon.

Oh any number of things. I'll look around for a better board, and if folks have suggestions while keepingin mind other folks issues named above, I'd be interested (translation: I'm not really looking, cause I have no clue how to find it, so go find me one and tell me ow to make it work here).

I'd love to have a few side threads, for example I recently watched the whole 'Firefly' season and then the movie and was just blown away, overall. Great story, what a talent, and the doctor was hot. That's important to note that the hit guy was the last thing I liked about it, I've been accused more than once of renting something for the pretty thing on the cover.

I have a Star Trek story, or one in it's universe I'm fleshing out, if anyone is interested. Oh, and for those that missed the Quantum's final chapter, you'll have to hang on, the epilogue has...gone longer than I thought. I was thinking a nice little piece to wrap it up and send em into the sunset...but they won't stop. There was alot I could have covered that I won't, because it's all been done before so I'm trying to keep it interesting, while not leaving out needed details. But after Drivers comment, I may need a show of speed in there somewhere. Dammit. I thought I was almost done, so now you have to wait longer.

Blame Driver ;-D

I like the Easter colors, and it is much easier to read. It would be nice if we had one of those "other" boards that has different topics and sub headings, sorta like the one at Greycastle OZ. You know Ashley D? He's an Administrator there and he did most of the research finding their new board. http://greycastleoz.org/forum/index.php
He would probably help you set it up, if you wanted, he's a really nice person.

I like the idea of a "anything" category for comments and questions. I would be interested in some of your thoughts on the current crop of political choices. I am an undecided vote right now. I'm of the opinion that "anyone is better than what we have", but the question is which one?

>>There are also new car announcements, which are

I want an electric car. I'd really like to get a plug-in, but I'll settle for a hybrid if I have to. Do any of you have electrics or hybrids? Any plans to buy green?

I don't mind waiting for the Epilogue of Quantum. It's such a great story, have you considered just letting it go on and on? You know just adding a chapter once a year or two? That's better than ending it, IMHO.:)

Well, I guess I have kind of gone on and on myself. It's just so darned good to have the forum back.

thanks again, Dave

This is a PHP board, similar to one I had installed earlier. The issues I encountered were with registration as alot of folks dind't want to enter a bunch of data before being able to post. Voy at least offers the Captcha thing rather than the other, but it's plain that some effort at security has to be made to keep out the spammers and whatnot.

I'm not entirely opposed to that, if the stories come naturally. My personal favorite, Long Day, has two weak chapters in my opinion. The first is chapter 2, which was me trying to take a completed short story and shape a serialized story out of it. The second is chapter 5, which always leaves folks confused because it abruptly shifts primary speakers and adds a new character to boot. What alot of readers don't know was that chapter 5 was originally conceived as a new story, not a part of Long Day, so the transition is rough. I did start a re-write of Long Day, a 'corrected' version if you will, but that hasn't progressed past the first chapter as of yet. Maybe I'll revisit that at some point.

I'm not a lot into religiosity, but the colors of Easter are exactly appropriate here, because they're the colors associated with ressurection

You coming back couldn't be more apropos. The timing is yours. I don't want the message to be missed.

As promised, the finale to The Quantum and it's epilogue are now posted along with Melina Catts chapters 7-11 of the Other Side.

Saw the Spiderwick Chronicles today and it really wasn't bad, in fact I rather enjoyed it. Always nice to see Joan Plowright and that Freddie Highmore is showing up everywhere! Where did this kid come from?

But I am really looking forward to the new Indiana Jones movie, and we'll be having a movie night Tuesday here for the DVD Enchanted.

So hey, enjoy the reads and we'll see you soon, aye?

This is exactly the 'wow' ending this story needed and deserved. Good job, and thanks for the extra effort.

I am obviously partial to Quantum :)

As for Freddie Highmore, isn't he grand?

Need........ More........ Quantum.

Liked it. The banter between the Geritol squad was priceless.
Bryan's speech was inspiring.

Great job!!

Is there going to be a sequel called "Jetta"?

I toyed briefly with a Vanagon idea, but I'm afraid it would be a clone. I'm sure there are other ways to twist the idea around, but I have a few other projects to look at right now. One of those is...the sequal to Breaking Masks. Long way off, but it's more than just a glimmer in the eye now.

I suppose I could do a road trip one based on the VW Bus though, couldn't I? That might be fun.

Ahh, curse you Lugnutz! As if I didn't have enough to do!

I was going to say something about the Vanagon, but didn't want to date myself.

As for the curse, it's my pleasure. Just call it job security.

It was a great finish to a wonderful story. As sorry as I am to see 'The End', you did a masterful job of it.

I eagerly anticipate the new end to Quantum that was promised earlier.

However, I'm really upset by the self-induced downfall of NY Governor Eliot Spitzer. I'm a NY native, and while I can't say I've followed his career, I've certainly been aware of it.

Spitzer, time after time, brought "it's about time" thoughts to me when he went after this corporate crook and that shady practice.

I cheered when he was elected Governor, partly on the promise to clean up corruption in state government. I know he had some rocky first months when he confronted that corruption head-on, but I thought it was just his style, rubbing up against career politicians, like a rasp against soft wood.

Now there's this, and he's out on his own demerits, but how COULD he. Jesus, if there was ever a career based on sheer merit and goodness, Spitzer owned it, and he earned it.

Tell me how a man like that, who built what he did, tossed it for the sake of two hours with a hooker who is barely older than his oldest daughter.

It's too shameful!

What's in the water in that tri-state area? Three states, three governors gone. Connecticut's Rowland landed in prison for corruption, mostly accepting favors. New Jersey's McGreevey quit when he was caught up in a gay sex affair, and now Spitzer in a really stupid, moronic sex affair.

Spitzer wasn't caught in any act. He was caught by how much he was spending. Tax guys nailed him, not the vice squad, and how sick is that?

Here's a simple question. Can anyone on this board possibly spend enough money on sex to even raise an eyebrow at the IRS? I sure couldn't.

I don't think I'd be this upset if I didn't have the before pictures in my mind, of the Governor and his beautiful family, and then the afters with his wife, who looks defeated and devastated. She's still at his side where she always seemed genuinely happy, and I absolutely hate that her happiness has been interrupted in such a callous way by the man she has loved all these years.

I don't wish Spitzer ill for his feelings, or his needs, or whatever. It's his deeds, and that look on his wife's face today at the press conference that tore me up. Lost faith was the sum of her expressions.

I hope they can fix things between themselves somehow. I don't know if I could.

I watched the press conferences on and off over the last couple of days. I found myself wondering the same things. How could he throw away his career and all the good he has accomplished for a couple of hours of sex? Did he ever think about what this would do to his family? I feel very sorry for his wife and daughters. His wife is still by his side and she looks devastated. That has to be the saddest face I have seen in a long time. I can't begin to imagine how awful all of this is for daughters and the pain and embarrassment they have to face because of his actions. I don't think he can repair the damage he has done to the lives of his family.

It's just very sad.

As someone who voted for Spitzer, who believed in his reputation and tough nosed tactics and who hoped that finally Joe Bruno and Sheldon Silver would get with it or get out of it, I was floored. No single word describes the embarassment, the disappointment and the damage he has done to himself and his family as well as the people who voted him in to help us from the 'business as usual' government that is so entrenched in NY.

There were no winners today, except the cheats and career politicians who will no longer have Spitzer on their backs.

Everything that is incomplete will get a fresh look. Begin Anew is complete, has been for a long time. Through TIme is a real mess isn't it? I should probably try and fix it before continuing with it. Right now I am finishing up Quantum, and maybe I'll toss a poll up and see what I should go to after that.

Ok, so. Here's the scoop. As many of you know, and many others may not, I have not been the webmaster of my site for some time. Several years in fact. I would not go so far as to call myself a webmaster now, it's more a situation of 'Please don't let me break it'.

The bottom line is that my webmaster had too many other, paying, gigs to keep this site updated as it needed to be. Since I didn't know how to do it, I felt kind of like I had to take his updates when they could happen. The frustration got to be too much and you all are stuck with me muddling through, with a great deal of help from my former webmaster in answering all my dumb little nubbish questions.

So where are we going? Well, I'm trying to assess if I can in fact run a site, doing the updates and such. As of now, I can. As long as that continues to be the case, and as long as I don't let the smoke out of the site, then it will go on past its scheduled sell by date of May 08.

What can you expect in the short term? You will see new stories posted, right now I am aiming for Sunday posts. There are several new chapters posted as you read this. Also, the final chapter of Quantum will be posted, as well as an epilogue that is just about done.

I have submissions I am reading through now. If you have stories you think would do well, now's the time. I hope to see you all again soon, please bear with me while I try to learn what is, basically, a foreign language in html and the commands to place things on the server.

See you all soon.
