I'm broken hearted. Bo Diddley has died. If you don't know Bo, then you don't know Diddley.

I wasn't even born when he came on the scene, but Bo was a favorite of my father's from his first release, and I grew up hearing his music, along with that of a lot of the other old blues merchants.

Bo Diddly, pretty much single-handedly, made rock and roll a guitar-based genre. Yeah, there were other guitar greats of that era, but they were playing piano music on their guitars, not something completely unique to the electric guitar.

Bo understood and used the power of the electric guitar like nobody before him, and it's that single power that has fueled rock since.

It's pretty simple, but Bo learned that if you turn your amp up and chunk the strings, you make a powerful sound. Chunk those strings to a solid rhythm, and you can make that guitar sound as compelling amd dangerous as a fast freight headed right at you.

That was the sound that gave rock a foundation. It was its own thing, not something else: not like country or blues or swing played faster.

Bo Diddley has to be the most copied musician of all time. Absolutely every rock band, from the Stones to Steve Miller, to Avril Lavigne uses the Diddley sound a lot, and he's very often cited as an influence.

That's as it should be, because Bo gave millions and millions of hopeful guitar players the nerve to say, "I don't care what momma don't like. I'm gonna rock this place all night!"

My favorite line from a song?

"You got your radio tuned down too low. TURN IT UP!"

My kind of guy.
