Well I certainly didn't agree with it at the time! To begin with the hairbrush was used I think as a kind of "finish off" - when I was much smaller, around 8 or 9, it was usually - again, I am guess-timating here, around 6-8 spanks after the part with his hand, and for the things he regarded as more serious - any kind of lying or dishonesty. It became more severe the older I got.
I think the crying part was kind of disregarded - it was expected. I was very frightened of being spanked, to me it was the ultimate disaster so I was always in tears before it started. I am the youngest of three and I think it was the same for my older brother and sister. Of course the worst ones were the ones that happened when I was older. I wasn't an angel by any means, the one I referred to above was one of the last, I had skipped out of school at lunch time, because I didn't want to go to an afternoon lesson for which I had not done the homework; I thought this would go unnoticed, but it was noticed and reported, this meant I had everyone worrying about me for hours, because it was so out-of-character for me, then lost track of time so that I didn't even go home at the right time, then delayed longer because I was panicking about what kind of trouble I might be in, and then finally when tracked down and 'caught', compounded everything by trying to lie my way out of trouble - it was a catalogue of misdemeanours - one of the things I remember most about that day was feeling so guilty when I realised how terrified my mother had been.
I am not in a situation where I spank now and am not sure if/when I ever will be. Here in the UK spanking is a sort of "grey area" in family law, neither exactly allowed or explicitly forbidden, the discussion is based on what is to be considered as "reasonable force" - I think my dad using a hairbrush would today be considered as unreasonable. I am thirty one and I got married last year. My older brother and sister are both married and both have kids. My brother and his wife have chosen not to spank, my sister has chosen to spank her children as a "last resort" - she uses her hand only but for the present her children (aged 7 and 5) are too young for anything else - I don't know if she intends to "escalate" as they get older. I am hoping to have children too maybe within another couple of years. Obviously whatever route we take concerning discipline or punishments at home must be the result of something we both agree on - and so far we haven't started on those discussions!
