Jamie: I hope you don't try to handle this all yourself. When my child came out to me, and that was with a bad "meltdown" when she was a pre-teen, I felt blindsided. I was too close to the situation to realize what others already knew. My child had the wrong gender to be a boy, and was always that way. With the help and encouragement of my family, they sort of "Circled the wagons" around us and helped me find suitable pediatric gender counselling. Along with referral to the proper doctors and much testing, both physical and psychological, she was put on puberty blockers at eleven and female hormones in a couple of years. We were able to change schools and towns, and with the help of letters from our doctors we are able to be in total deep stealth in our new community. This is working out very well and now she's finishing up her freshman year of high school. Since there was never any serious male hormones in her from the start, she's grown into a very beautiful young lady, and prettier than I was at the same age. Beware, though. Blockers like depo and lupron are very expensive. Not to mention all the testing, councelling, and Hormone treatments. Thankfully my late husbands insurance is picking up the tab for over half of all this treatment, but it's still very expensive for us. The trouble is though, if you don't go through all this trouble and expense there's far too much chance of negative or perhaps catastrophic outcomes.
This is just some concerned and serious council.

Respectfully,

Michelle S.
