Rectal Temperature Story

The Initial Visit.

In a community where many disadvantaged families reside, a no-fee medical evaluation and referral service is available to youngsters ages five to 12 of these families. When a new patient arrives, a basic medical history, taken by the front office worker, is documented as well as the patient's symptoms, if any. In addition, the young patient's vital signs are taken. This screening service allows the family to pay a reduced fee from a referred affiliated medical professional. A youngster's caretaker (be it a parent, extended family member, etc.) is encouraged to visit for any other health concern without paying for a doctor's visit. Also, young patients are welcomed for "checkups" or other health concerns. These visits can be as frequent as needed giving the caretaker's assurance that the youngster is in good health. As with any visit, the reason for the visit is documented and the youngster's vital signs are taken.

With the arrival of a high volume of "traffic", a full-time "attendant" takes vital signs, which includes measuring weight and height, and taking the youngster's temperature. Glass thermometers are used largely by tradition and for economic purposes, to take a patient's temperature. Because the instrument can break inside a youngster's mouth, either intentional or by accident, taking his temperature rectally is an option. Younger ones, that is, in the age groups of five to six are, by definition, unable to hold a glass thermometer in their mouths safely and therefore have their temperatures taken rectally across the board. For older youths, however, the decision to take their temperature rectally depends on their intellectual capacity and emotional health. An older youth that demonstrates a lack intellectual capacity (such as being held back a grade at school) or has a history of emotional deficits (such as having a hyperactive disorder) is designated to have his temperature rectally, being considered as if he were a five year old and treated as such. In addition, a youngster observed to display maturity or behavior that is uncharacteristic of a youth of a given age, a subjective decision is made to have his temperature taken rectally. Once designated to have his temperature taken rectally, he will continue to have it taken that way on all subsequent visits unless there has been a significant change in the condition that renders him to have his temperature taken rectally. For the young patient to get accustomed to having his temperature taken that way, the caretaker has the option, and is encouraged to, bring the youngster in for frequent "well" visits checkup every week or so until he gets accustomed to the experience, which may last couple of months or so.

Standard glass five inch thermometers are used for oral temperatures while modified five inch glass thermometers are used for rectal temperatures. Originally intended for veterinary use, these larger size rectal thermometer are ideal for taking rectal temperatures of older youngsters as it allows for deeper penetration (over an inch and a half) and yet serves as a reminder that it is in place as it projects perhaps an inch and a half projects from the young patients rear end. Note that the glass ring is removed from the other end and is sanded and polished to resemble standard glass thermometer It alxo has the characteristic white stripe along one side of the thermometer.

A youngster designated to have his temperature taken rectally has a red tag clipped to his chart. However, before a patient has his temperature taken rectally he is directed to use the restroom in order that he be clear for entry of the glass thermometer. All temperatures are taken in a large alcove adjacent to the waiting room. From the waiting room, a casual observer can see a row of five chairs against the wall on the right and a workstation on the wall on the left. In the middle of the alcove is a white 1950s examination table with white rolled paper on the black padded top. The back of the examination table faces the waiting room. This configuation provides the most efficient manner to take temperatures as several oral temperatures and one rectal temperature (on the examination table) can be taken simultaneously. Having no physical barrier between the waiting room and the "temperature room" enables free movement between the areas and further improves facilitating efficiency. With the youngster poisitioned face down on the on the examination with his trousers and underwear pulled down to his knees, he is considered to have sufficient privacy, as only his bare rear end is visible to anyone in eyesite of the examination table.

That's wrong. Perhaps have a privacy curtain around the area as people in the waiting area should not be able to see any part of his bare rear end. Or, find a private room where the door can be shut.

Regional and local perception of privacy dictates what constitutes an acceptable level of privacy. By one community standards, for example, exposure of a youngster's bare rear end during a medical visit may be of no significance with regard to his privacy. Thus, for example, taking the youngster's temperature rectally in an open area, in the presence of casual observers, would be a non issue.

However, that being said, if it appears strong objections build over the content of this story, I will cease posting the succeeding segments and ask the moderator to delete segment(s) already posted.

Wrong. Federal and state law and patient rights standards dictates what is considered to be an acceptable level of privacy.And I find it hard to believe that that would be a non issue in this day and age.

I think that it is totally unnecessary to get all wound up over this story. Read it for what it really is, it's just a story, that may reflect past or present real events. For sure, there are enough accounts, going back to the 1950s of rectal temps being taken in common areas at doctors offices, clinics, etc., without regard to privacy. However, although the probability is highly remote, taking rectal temps in an open area could still be occurring somewhere.

It is likely that some readers find this type rectal temp story exciting and while others find it anything from boring to extremely offensive. Since this fetish obviously originates from childhood encounters with the rectal thermometer, it stands to reason that there would be some sort of excitement involving childhood memories. To keep these experiences active, stories are written about them in this element. It only takes common sense to figure out whether the story reflects real events or not.

From the tone of the above comments, I suspect that the writer finds the story offensive because it is in conflict with his own rectal temp fantasy. In this context, it's posting represents a threat to the commenter's fantasy.

I never heard of any federal and state legislation in effect that sets any patient privacy standards for medical exams, procedures, etc., other than the federal Privacy Act. That law enforces medical information records only. Any one else hear of anything like that?

On another note, isn't it kind of ironic that this fetish was created by the medical profession itself?

In the early 1970's I had some surgery & while being admited to the hospital the nurse admitting me NEVER closed the curtian even though it was there & at the age of (5) one would have a certan amount of modisty. I told them I didn't want it taken that way ,my parents told them to not do it that way,they NEVER asked which way they ( my doctor or parents) wanted it done! My doctor had to write them a note on a precription pad telling to (not) take it that way. He was taking it axilary,I remember still being in diepers & having an oral temperature taken. The hospital I was admited to was a teaching hospital & they wanted to show the students how to take a rectal temperatue & didn't want to ask which way I was having it taken. The boy next to me (had) his temperature taken rectaly & he had a curtian & they didn't pull (it) when they took his temperature. He didn't object to having his taken that way.They wanted for me to see him having his taken that way I will have to say even at the age of (5)yrs old it (might) cause a child to have an orgazim(it did me) a child might not know what an orgazim is at the age of (5)yrs. But that (doesn't) stop them from having one ( just to show sutdents how to take an RT!) The nurse I told to take her own RT >told me< she had to show the student she brought in the room how to take an RT! Now think of a (5)yr old today! Would anyone see a (5)yr old & say that's the (only way) a (5)yr old (without) asking the parents standing in the room AND with a curtian right next to them to not close it tells me they knew what they were doing from the start!

In my work with DwoB, there are frequently no issues with privacy as there are in the United States. While Americans are quite concerned with their children's (and their own) privacy, in many Third World countries, these issues are not frequent. I have personally taken rectal temperatures in front of other individuals (both adult and juvenile and male as well as female). The nudity issues so commonly causing the concern in the States is usually non-existant in these countries, so for example, taking a rectal temperature of an eight-year-old girl in front of several boys of (about) the same age is not considered to be an invasion of privacy. We are talking of countries where these children are frequently naked in public anyway, and for the sake of expedience we do what we need to do.
As for the irony of the "fetish" being caused by the medical profession, well, we didn't "cause" it... there are other mitigating circumstances involved in those cases, I believe.
