Before I saw Brokeback Mountain, I wasn't remotely interested in country and western music, but things have changed, and I recently read Nicholas Dawidoff's In the Country of Country. It contains the following passage, in which Buck Owens talks about his friendship with Don Rich, killed in a motor cycle accident:

Has anyone heard anything about Luke Halpin of the 60's tv show "Flipper" being gay? I have read this on a few web sites, and i always had a massive boner for him. One website even had a recent picture of him, and he must be the best looking 57 year old on the planet, although he now has a mustache. If he is gay, someone had better invent a time machine so i can go back to the late 60's and boink him senseless. Too bad it is still taboo for a teen idol to come out. Will we still want him when a 68 year old Aaron Carter comes out?
