'JAG' star David James Elliot hopes to capture audience on ABC's summer series 'Scoundrels'

When he got into the acting business, David James Elliott had a fairly simple goal: Just pay the bills.

That's gotten a bit harder as time has worn on, but Elliott, best known for his starring role in "JAG," has continued working all along and can now be seen in ABC's "Scoundrels," a short-run summer series that's airing Sundays at 9.

"I didn't expect anything," says Elliott. "I hoped to make a living. But I just figured it would be me against the world. Now, I'm married with children, so the stakes are even higher.

"It's more challenging to make a living as an actor now," he adds. "I always said I'd never give up. That's still my approach."

"Scoundrels" stars Elliott, Virginia Madsen, John Patrick Flueger, Leven Rambin, Vanessa Marano and Carlos Bernard as a family of thieves that got out of the business, but must get back in when Elliott's character goes to jail. The series is based on a New Zealand series entitled "Outrageous Fortune."

Elliott was brought in after Neal McDonough was recast after balking at love scenes he would have with Madsen.

"It was such a great script," Elliott says. "The fact that it had eight shows to grab an audience is a plus."

It also helped, he says, that the concept had a proven run in New Zealand.

"You look for something that speaks to you," he said. "Here, there are endless possibilities for story lines. Other than that, you look for the writing and characters that speak to you, speak to a gut feeling you have."

Taking on "Scoundrels" also meant Elliott was basically out of the mix when networks were casting and shooting pilots for next season. Still, he figures it was better to have eight episodes in hand, rather than one with a guarantee of nothing.

"At the end of the day, I feel like I've gotten to where I wanted to go, or close," he says. "The satisfaction comes from working with talented people around you. I've always been the guy who wants to give 200%. Everyone here gave it their all."

"Scoundrels" is one of a handful of scripted entertainment shows ABC launched this summer, a time when broadcasters have been limiting the warm months to reality series and other less expensive fare.

"It's a great way to grab an audience when no one is watching," he says. "Hopefully, you have some success and end up on the regular schedule."
