As things stand, the only way I can compete in slow-speed hard shoe is to drop down into the "and-over" levels. And if I do, I will be ineligible to join my fellow adults in ceili competition without serving a five-year ban from competition. Why?
It's NOTHING to do with wigs and sequins. Being forced to make a choice between pushing ourselves as solo competitors and enjoying the camaraderie of ceili with our peers is driving many of the more capable adults away from Irish dancing and into activities that don't persist in such overt age discrimination.
And Irish dancing is losing out!
