- fairy reel help -- brigid, 20:51:37 05/18/13 Sat [3]
so now im reading through the fairy reel think i get it. watch a video and it made me sit up and refer back to the book, thinking oh this video is wrong. hmmm. I watch a dif video and it has it the way i THOUGHt it was. BUT as I reread the book im thinking now im missreading it again.
for slip sides has
partners (lady on rt) facing take rt hands sidestep and 3s to gents LEFT & back(free dancer to right and back.)
THEN gent turns to lady on left. movement repeated with partner on left, other partner dancing to left and back.
I automatically assumed the couple was then sidestepping to the right. but it doesnt say that. it says repeat and only specifies direction of the lone lady. I see videos of it as i thought i understood it with sidestep to left then to right. now i see another one with each couple dancing to the left, which is a very specific interpretation of the book actually. so im asking, which is the right way? how is it generally accepted? anyone get it on the exam? how was it to be danced?
damn ambiguous wording!

- Footwork in Ceili Dancing -- cp, 18:09:59 05/16/13 Thu [6]
When making sure that everyone is on the correct foot, I have been using the rule, that each time a new movement within a dance is commenced (generally speaking, as I know there are exceptions)then it should be commenced with the right foot. So, for example, after having danced the Four Sevens in the 4 Hand Reel, gents have their left foot in front, and so to commence the "Hands Across" movement, they would need to switch to the right foot. Is this correct?

I know I have to have soft and hard shoe steps prepared for all dances and different levels, 6 modern sets and 7 traditionals. But I still have the following questions:
- Are you dancing by yourself in front of the panel, or are there other candidates as well? I could imagine you'd need a breather between dances at some point. Are there more candidates and are they having you take turns?
- How long is the practical exam? Is soft shoe and hard shoe separate with a break? (again, because you might need to catch your breath).
- My TC says OC level is not necessary as long as you have good technique, good rhythm and are able to teach. I can actually teach OC steps, it's just that my execution isn't top notch. What do you ladies and gents think?
I would really appreciate you feedback. I already have my TMRF and would love to get my TCRG as well. It's quite an investment with travel that's involved and I'd like to be prepared as much as possible if I do go for it.

How many of you are paid by the student?
How many of you are paid by the hour?
I am not planning on making Irish dancing my full-time job. It's a healthy part-time job.
The board of my school (it is a non-profit) has asked me to find out what "market rates" for wages for TCRGs are like.
Currently, I make $20 an hour, and teach approximately 10 hours per week. I am not paid by the student, but instead by the non-profit.
How does it work for you, new colleagues?

Im studying to retake ceili teaching. overall feel MUCH better this time. But in teaching the simple dance Haste to the Wedding Im having difficulty with a detail and perhaps im reading too much into it or over thinking it and im hoping to get some help and tghat i can type to explain it sufficiently. I will say i dont have a video to follow ive searched you tube and with only 3 weeks left i wouldnt be able to order a video in time. If anyone nows of one onyoutube thats accurate please forward it to me...
the set up is same as walls of limerick as I understand it.(?)
couples numbered off from top of room BUT evens being tops.
The even couple takes both crossed hands and dance up the center sidestep and back then takes in the other lade (lady #1 or odd lady) for a ring to the right, then gent etc...
my hang up is...the odd lady is to be taken into the circle on even gents left hand (book states specifically partner is on gents right) in order for that to happen with the positions or dance set up as i have it understood either, the top (even) couple would have to slightly turn so that lady would be on correct side of gent, the odd lady would have to dance into them somehow and rotate herself around, our my ideea of the set up of the dance is somehow flawed (which is likely) and then the same problem presents itself with the 2nd ring with the gent.
anyone?

for those who have retaken - how helpful was the feedback in terms of explaining where you went wrong? I can't really make much sense of mine. I know where / thought I went wrong, but I want to make sure I don't miss anything in prepping again.
for those that have passed second, third (etc) time - what did you do differently on your final attempt that you think swung it for you and pushed you above 70%?

- I haven't found the feedback they provide to be helpful at all really. For example, they say you didn't progess at a suitable pace but don't indicate if you were too fast or too slow! I too am prepping for a retake so am just trying to be more confident, more comfortable with my steps and see if that makes a difference. (NT) -- Good luck, 12:26:17 04/30/13 Tue
- It's tricky to say. If you are re-taking the teaching portion I think confidence goes a long way. Look and Feel confident. Connect with the dancers and listen to what the panel has to say. Usually they are trying to help you. Make sure the steps you teach are appropriate for the level and age of the dancers as well that the material is current and the dancers can execute the material. (NT) -- KQ, 20:59:34 05/01/13 Wed
- From my experience I walked in, the panel introduced me to the dancers. I then asked for their name, age and level they are currently competing in. I then proceeded to ask, can you please show me a step? I watched and decided what step would be appropriate based on what I just watched them perform as well as for their age group and for their level of competition. I then showed them the step I was interested in teaching. Then I looked at them for acknowledgment knowing that they can dance the step and broke it down teaching them piece by piece. Throughout this process I would ask them to show me the step before I advanced on to more material. This seemed to work for me and I only got maybe 4-6 bars in and then the panel stopped me and started to ask questions. (NT) -- You can do it! KQ, 21:25:35 05/01/13 Wed
- I agree with the other posters, confidence in your ability is key. I was way more confident the second time around, and it showed, I got lost in what I was teaching and almost forgot the panel was there. Make sure to speak loudly as well (if you didn't last time), as I think this certainly was counted against me my first go around (NT) -- Good luck!, 23:29:54 05/01/13 Wed
- I have my own question - how on earth are you supposed to concentrate on lilting the right tune at the right speed while assessing the dancer's abilities before choosing a step, all at once? I was concentrating so hard on lilting (they stopped me and told me I was going too fast so I had to start them again) that I have no idea what the kids actually danced. Another question - my feedback for the dancing exam says that I didn't dance to the required standard in one of my solos, one of my sets, and one traditional set. But then I only failed by one mark? SO confused. (NT) -- ., 09:58:47 05/02/13 Thu
- in class i teach infront of the children with my back to them and a mirror in front of me so i can still see the kids as they pick up the steps. for the exam is it best to teach as i have described although there will not be a mirror in front and keep glancing behind if possible or should i teach standing in between or beside the child or children? appreciate your help in advance (NT) -- thanks, 22:59:14 05/02/13 Thu
- When lilting the tune, do most of you do "de de di de dum" or do you say the words of the step to the tune? When I teach I usually will just say the words of the step, but you can hear the tune in my voice. Is that acceptable when teaching the step? Or should I just hum the tune? When teaching jigs from ARF (such as Humours of Bandon, Trip to the Cottage) and partners/couples are taking hands, all of the videos I have watched have the couples taking uncrossed hands. But in the points to remember part of ARF it states that when partners/couples take hands, ladies hands are crossed and gents are uncrossed. So if I have to teach one of these, should I teach it with crossed hands or not? It seems that if partners are not supposed to cross their hands, then the book specifies...
[ Post a Reply to this Message ][ Edit | View ]
Replies:
- The intro to ARF explains that if the book doesn't specify, hands should be crossed. However, as with everything ARF there are exceptions to this rule. One notable exception is the Humours of Bandon. ARF doesn't specify that hands should be uncrossed, but it is traditionally danced with uncrossed hands and should thus be taught with uncrossed hands. - Thanks, so would Humours be the ONLY one that should be taught with uncrossed hands? (NT) -- op, 20:16:36 03/18/13 Mon

- Yes, I agree. That's definitely how I would do it. We teach our dancers to do HoB with crossed hands. (NT) -- jh, TC, 19:50:15 03/19/13 Tue
- A friend of mine was asked to teach HoB during her exam and taught it with uncrossed hands and she passed. So long as you have a justification for the way you are teaching it, I would think you will be fine. However, they do want to see you teach the dances the way they are traditionally danced, regardless of what the book says (unfortunately). Teaching HoB with uncrossed hands is like teaching Lannigan's Ball and Gates with overs instead of skips - the book doesn't specify but that's how they're traditionally done. (NT) -- TC, 00:33:11 03/20/13 Wed
- A friend of mine passed teaching uncrossed as well. The main point here is to be clear as to why you're doing what you're doing. If you're going to teach uncrossed, explain that the book says crossed, but it's traditionally done uncrossed. That's why my friend passed. However, personally, I wouldn't do it that way, since the book does specify that if it does not say in a particular dance, then hands should be crossed. (NT) -- jh, TC, 04:54:10 03/20/13 Wed

I recently passed my exam and opened my own school- my previous school is not as supportive as I had expected and I'm running into a few dilemmas. I never danced many ceilis/figures as a competitive dancer so it is challenging to make 2 & 3 hands for my dancers.
Just want a few words of advice!
How many sets of 8 do these dances need to be? (6 sets total?) Do they need to consist of a full lead around (2 sets of 8?) And are there any components that need to be included in the choreography?
Thanks so much- I am always happy to supply answers regarding the exam, but I am still learning post-exam lessons!

Just a quick question for those who took in January - re the dancing section - did anyone have to dance two jig or two hornpipe sets, or were they keen to see one of each from every candidate? Actually another question now I think of it - which trad sets did you have to dance? Did everyone do one "old" and one "new"?

Hi all! Not sure if anyone else will find this helpful, but I converted my Olive Hurley videos into audio so I can listen on my phone/ in the car, wherever. It has really helped me visualize the dances and memorize better than just watching the video and matching it up with the ARF. I know I've been told lots, and want to warn that there are errors in the Olive Hurley videos so its best to always check the ARF. If you're interested in me sending the audio to you, just leave your email as a reply. I only have 1, 2 and 4 currently though. Good luck everyone!!

Also, put the set dance music on your iPod and listen to it when you're in the car, working out, whenever! (NT) -- Good luck :), 16:52:53 03/22/13 Fri
- If you've never done ceili before, I strongly recommend going through and picking the easy ones first. Walls, Siege of Ennis, Rakes of Mallow, all those short dances with no figures. Get the easy ones learnt first before you tackle the more difficult dances with tricky figures - get used to the book terminology first, because it's old fashioned language at times. I also honestly think dancing them is the best thing you could ever do - especially when the written paper asks "I am gent x list the ladies I meet and the hands I give them in x" - if you've danced in with real people, you can visualise the movement and remember the direction/hands so much more easily. For example I use the terms treble and click, but the teacher I'm working with at the moment uses the terms rally and slice. We are in neighbouring cities. The email is signed by Lisa Petri. Before I complete the form (which asks for SSN), I wanted to ask if all successful candidates receive this automated email?
Do they get our email addresses from CLRG? I haven't finished my registration with CLRG yet, so if they didn't get my email address from CLRG, I imagine the ADCRG who sponsored me furnished my email address to IDTANA.
