- How the solo section works.. -- x, 19:53:01 11/13/09 Fri [8]
This may have been asked before, but I just want to make sure. For the solo dance section of the exam, I know that it is done down the line, dancer by dancer, stepabout style. But does each dancer do only 1 step at a time?
i.e., If there were 3 dancers, dancer 1 would do step 1, dancer 2 would do step 1, dancer 3 would do step 1, and then it's back to dancer 1 for step 2?
I just want to be absolutely sure, since it changes things for the flow of my steps whether I have to do one at a time, or two together.

Due to the response of the dance music timing tutorial I offered a few weeks ago, Diddlyi magazine is featuring a series on the topic! I'm addressing one tune type at a time with a timing diagram and a shortened narrative to fit the format. The first article, for which help is most frequently requested, is about understanding slip jigs. No knowledge of music reading or music time signatures is required to understand the timing. The website is www.mag.diddlyi.com. Anyone who wants the 15-page tutorial can send me an email at mark@markarringtonmusic.com

The wooden floor where I teach is not the greatest, and the rental company would like me to start using portable flooring... I am a small school and definitely cannot afford anything expensive, but I had heard of people buying linoleum and laying it upside down on the floor. Also heard the more durable linoleum is the only way to go, as the cheap stuff tears easily. I checked out Lowes yesterday, but they only had vinyl flooring. I have no idea what to buy, what will last, and what is the most cost effective. Any suggestions? My husband suggested going to an actual flooring place, as opposed to Lowes or the Depot.
Thoughts? Experiences?

...spending the first 30 minutes just writing out every single ceili dance from memory. Not the description of the movements, of course; just the names of the movements for each dance. I thought that it might help me to have it all written out, so I can refer back to it when I answer the exam's questions. It would just be an extra boost in case I, for example, forget one dance in which "Ladies' Chain" is a figure, or whatever.
Has anyone else done this before? Did you find it useful, or a waste of time? If you had only 90 minutes remaining to answer all 15 exam questions, was that enough time or did you feel rushed?

- Question about Trip to the Cottage -- c, 17:56:23 10/21/09 Wed [3]
In Trip to the Cottage's Body, the book describes how the top couples plus side ladies form a ring after doing the diagonal advance & retire movement. It says nothing about what the idle side gents should be doing. But in Olive Hurley's video, those lone gents sidestep to the right, so they're in a better position to be taken into the rings. Should I do it that way too? It certainly makes sense. But the book says nothing about it.
Secondly, in Olive's version she has the dancers swinging around each other with uncrossed hands. Any particular reason why? I usually go with crossed hands as the default, unless the book says otherwise.

My new CD "CHAMPTRAX" will be released in the next few weeks. The CD is mostly championship-length tunes played once, twice, and three times through. There are also four non-championship-length tune tracks. Until the release, you can download the non-championship-length tune tracks from the CD for free from the “Music Samples” page of my site www.markarringtonmusic.com. The tunes are jigs (113 bpm, 5+ minutes), single jigs (120, bpm 4+ minutes), reels (113 bpm, 4+ minutes), and hornpipes (138 bpm, 6 minutes). If you want any of these at a different speed you can order them on the “Order Music and Stuff” page.
