Subject: I'm taking the Dec exam in Derry. For the written ceili, I was thinking of...

...spending the first 30 minutes just writing out every single ceili dance from memory. Not the description of the movements, of course; just the names of the movements for each dance. I thought that it might help me to have it all written out, so I can refer back to it when I answer the exam's questions. It would just be an extra boost in case I, for example, forget one dance in which "Ladies' Chain" is a figure, or whatever.

Has anyone else done this before? Did you find it useful, or a waste of time? If you had only 90 minutes remaining to answer all 15 exam questions, was that enough time or did you feel rushed?

[> I just did the written exam in Virginia. I tried to do this (did it for book 1 dances) but it took TOO much time, and also, I didn't need it. What I would do is write out all of the ceilis in the order that they appear in the book so that you don't forget about any. -- almost ran out of time., 12:35:03 10/11/09 Sun [1]

Like the first poster I quickly wrote out all the names of the dances, so I'd have all 30 to refer back to - really helpful for the 'name all the dances with a place name in Ireland' type questions. Then I skimmed the exam paper, and next to each question quickly noted the movements I'd need to refer to in my answer - used my own shorthand - '1/2 R & L' for 'Half right and left' etc. That took about 10 minutes, and was great for calming the nerves - made me confident I knew the answer to each question.

However, I was still pushed for time at the end, only had a couple of minutes to quickly check over the paper. Passed with 98% though :-). So, long story short, I think it is a great idea to quickly write out things to refer to, but not to spend so long that you'll run out of time to actually answer the questions! Try out different methods with practice exams and find what works best for you.. good luck!

[> I did this (scored 95% on written). I practiced writing them out so I knew how long it would take--I didn't want to use more than 30 min. I made up abbreviations for some movements and I found it easier to list the 30 dances in alphabetical instead of book order. -- makes things easier, having it all laid out in front of you!, 16:08:54 10/11/09 Sun [1]

[> It will waste too much time. Do the questions that are easiest first and go back for the ones you really need to think about. I got a 98% on the written. Spit out word for word the book and you will be fine.more -- ., 09:22:59 10/27/09 Tue [1]

If in doubt put more info than they ask. For example, on asking number of bars in a figure, put the number for the top couple and then say that opposite tops, leading sides and opposite sites now repeat the movement for a total of x bars.

[> Don't want to confuse matters, but: 1) I would be wary about spending too much time writing out all of the dances and their moves. I did write out the thirty dance names in order so that I could refer back to it. I used up every bit of the two hours - just got exam finished. 2) You don't need to answer using the exact words from the book. 3) Make sure you get your big points answers done. If you are going to run out of time miss out on the minor points. -- Good luck!, 15:21:31 10/28/09 Wed [1]
