Subject: Which side is facing the music?

I can't figure out where the 'music' is supposed to be. From the judges perspective, is it on their right?

"Near the music" and "top of room" seem to be used interchangeably to denote where a top couple should stand. But that's kind of confusing, because these days we don't really refer to a ceili formation in reference to the music.

You can pretty much put the top couple wherever you want, as long as you line up the other couples accordingly and as long as you have a reason for putting the top couple in the spot you choose.

For competition purposes these days, the top couple in any 8-hand dance will have their backs to the judges/audience. So the audience could be considered your "music" in that instance.

For 4-hands, the top couple is usually placed to the judges' left, with their right shoulders facing the audience, so that the dance can be better viewed.

For the progressive dances, you can line them up either vertically or horizontally. Just make sure you check the book to see what end should be tops. For example, in Rince Fada the book specifically points out that the gents should have their left side to the "top" of the room, and that the couples are numbered off starting from the top. So if you line up the gents vertically, you could put the gents on the left of the judges, in which case the couple furthest away would be tops, or you could put them to the right of the judges, in which case the couple closest would be tops.

I know--confusing, right? But just have an idea of what the book says, what convention in competition dictates, and your reason for setting up the dance the way you choose, and as long as you explain yourself logically to the judges you can't go wrong. They would probably frown at you if you put the top couple in a 4-hand to the right of the panel/audience, but they can't fault you for choosing to set up the Waves of Tory vertically as opposed to horizontally. The set-ups change depending on the number of the dancers and the size of the room.
