I have learnt the version of garden of daisies on utube.. The one with the American girl dancing on a board in. Her living room.. The end of the set is different on olive Hurley video.. I wonder if this version is also acceptable?

- There are different versions of the same traditional sets. When I had to dance Garden in 2010, the other candidates ended the set differently than I did, but when candidates had to dance it in September, they did it the same way I learned it. (NT) -- ., 19:08:33 11/11/12 Sun
- There are many versions of Garden. The one I dance has no crosskeys or jumps where the feet come uncrossed, or those skiier moves, but I've seen tons of versions that do. The version I do has won regional championships (not me ha) and been performed at majors so it's good. There was a directive issued some months back saying that judges/examiners aren't allowed to mark down for someone doing a more obscure version or their least preferred version. - A friend of mine who took the exam in Glasgow had to write out there list of sets (unsure if time needed to be included) but when I did mine in Limerick we didn't write out or say anything so I don't think you would need to put your speeds down so long as you've got the right dances. - For your own dancing, I can't see why the examiners would want to know what speed you're dancing at. I know they like to confirm that the sets they have listed are correct so they don't ask you to dance one that you didn't include or changed. At the end of the first figure of the HoB, the book says that only the lead couple turns in place, but every time I see it danced, both couples are turning in place. Which is correct?

- I didn't do anything - not because I thought props were a bad idea but just simply one I didn't really consider. What is the difference between 2/4 and 4/4 timing? Would it be wrong if I labeled a dance that was 4/4 as 2/4 or vise versa? I've also seen the Garden of Daisies labeled as 4/4 and 2/4 from different study guides. Which one is correct? or are they both passable answers?

How much notice do you get of which dances you will be doing.. I.e. When will they tell you which set dances you have to do? Will you have enough time to practice them through before dancing them?

- They tell you right before you do it. If you are not first in the rotation you definitely have some time to practice. If you are first, they will give you a couple of min to get your music and run through it. (NT) -- jh, 16:32:03 11/05/12 Mon
- You will be in line for hard shoe and soft shoe and trads and really only have a few moments of music set up to find out wha you're doing. For sets after knowning your first one like the above poster said, you get the next after you finish each one so you have the length of time it takes for your turn to come up again to go over it. Any thoughts on this - I'm sure I read somewhere that at the start of the exam, someone wrote out the full list of movements for each dance to refer to during the actual asnwering of the questions. Has anyone done this? I think I'll have time as it usually takes me one hour to answer a paper with distractions, so I might give it a go.

I was in Limerick and most people used to the full two hours to get everything down so I don't think there is always time.     - If you're familiar enough with the book all you'll need to do is write the name of the dances. Then, you will be able to bring the movements to mind quickly. - i studied to be able to write out the entire book. my plan was to write the entire book in shorthand at the start of the exam (just names and names of movements). - Parent's meeting. Tell everyone that in order to maintain a productive and supportive environment for the children/dancers, who are the most important part of the school, gossiping and backbiting on the part of the parents will not be tolerated. Say that parents are encouraged to report negativity and bitchiness in confidence, and sanctions will be taken against parents who are undermining the family nature of the school and the positive atmosphere you're trying to create. Sanctions could include a feis ban for the kid, premises ban for the parent, privileges removed ie no longer allowed to sit on fundraising council or whatever. Say you feel terrible that the child of these parents will suffer as a consequence but as they are grown adults you have no jurisdiction over them, only your school and it's dancers. Children will only suffer sanctions if their parents misbehave. Then, FOLLOW THROUGH. (NT) -- ., 14:03:21 11/02/12 Fri

So in my study guide it says there are 288 bars in Trip. I added everything up, and because the First Figure is done 4 times (each lady advancing to do the pretzel move) wouldnt the total number of bars for the dance be 336?

Book says: partners take right hands and turn half round, gents retaining partners hand, takes L hand of lady on left.. What do they do with their feet? I would be inclined to do sidestep on left foot, but it doesn't say to do that in the book, (and the rising step in the next move on left foot)..what would be right to do in the exam?

- I would do sidestep for two reasons - first reason being that the move is very similar to back to back and these are done with sidestep. Secondly I think it would be weird to do two skips into the rising step. (NT) -- ., 11:58:50 10/29/12 Mon

Lilting reels -- Out of breath, 17:53:16 10/29/12 Mon [3]
I find it really hard to lilt full on advanced reels at the speed and for the length required for ceilis (ie more than a step). Im fine with advanced reels for the length required for solo teaching, but for ceilis my fallback plan has been to lilt 'baby' reels, the simpler faster tunes that beginners usually dance to. I've now found out that these are technically polkas, and are in 2/4 time as opposed to the 4/4 of a 'real' reel - but they are the tunes played at feisanna for beginners reels. do you think this will matter?

What tune/s is everyone planning to lilt for 'generic' reel ceilis?

- Glasgow Reel, probably. Hard to forget that tune! Maybe McLoughlin's Reel as it's one of my favourites. I've heard that the panel often lilt along with you. Perhaps you could clap along too, to make sure that you can pick up the rhythm if you have to take a big breath? I shouldn't imagine you'd be lilting for a huge amount of time even in ceili. - I suggest putting in breathing spots, a wind instrument player will drop a note here and there to breathe on when playing reel tunes that don't have space for the inhale. Practice it that way to make sure you remember to take the breath at the right spot. -- Aine, 21:54:24 10/30/12 Tue

  - I'm more than prepared for the writtens, I think. Teaching should be ok although I do have one small area of worry. I am not 100% ready on dancing, still have one set to choreograph (part of the way there) and my stamina isn't there yet. At this stage I'm trying to be relaxed about it, I'm trying to tell myself I can just retake and it doesn't much matter, but waves of nausea and nerves do sweep over me every now and then. - No, and it's only just over three weeks away. I may be able to cancel the Saturday night on my hotel reservation if I'm teaching early enough to get home after, but I'll need to know soon as the cancellation policy will expire soon.It already costs so much, I don't want to waste money on a hotel when I have a nice bed at home if I can help it!   - Claire said the last possible time for someone to start their teaching exam on the Saturday night is 8pm. I imagine there will be slippage though so perhaps add an hour. Incidentally I think they messed up her email address initially as her name is Claire with an e, they have rectified her email address so if you're typing clair@ it might not reach her. What celi parts are most difficult and challenging to teach in the exam? Im wondering which ones I should give priority to practice teaching the most before the exam..

- The pretzel/knot/whatever you call it from Trip, Circle and Cross in HCC, Arch Arms 16HR (I think anyway because it is so fast), and Back to Back (in whichever dance). Those would be what I consider tough anyway. (NT) -- Becky, 18:42:59 10/24/12 Wed

  - Short threes are back 23s because you do them on the spot, hence short. Two threes are either skips or over 23s, because they enable you to move if you need to (which you do in Haste). - I would have them dance it alone. If the book doesn't specify that someone should be dancing, I would operate on the assumption that they aren't moving (the exception being the gent sidestepping right in the Body of Trip).     - I think this is one of those regional things. Like in the 2nd figure of Humours of Bandon - some regions have the other dancers perform the rise and grind after the sevens with the couple performing the figure; some don't. When the ladies are exchanging places, the book says the gents are dancing two short threes - is this back-two-threes, or skip two threes on the spot? I understood short threes to be back two threes, but on olive video they're skipping on the spot.
