] Date Posted: Thu, Aug 04 2011, 23:22:30 ![]() EVEN as Tropical depression "Juaning" developed into a storm, battering most of the Bicol region and Aurora Province, the reigning Miss Earth winners who were acrowned in Nha Trang,Vietnam last December flew in for a 10-day visit to the pageant’s birthplace and graced a series of activities to raise consciousness on the need to save and protect the environment as well as to promote the forthcoming Miss Earth pageant in November in Pattaya, Thailand. Miss Earth 2010 Nicole Faria, 21, from Bangalore, India, captivated members of media and the general public during her Manila tour. "I am so amazed at the warmth of my reception here in Manila. Filipinos are so giving, so welcoming, I just feel so at home even if I got terrified for a moment during the earthquake early this morning," she said during a press luncheon at the Discovery Suites’ Columbus Bar in Ortigas, Pasig City. Faria is a freelance model who is also in her final year in college majoring in Psychology. She is the first Miss Earth from the subcontinent and only the second Asian to wear the crown, after our very own Karla Henry in 2008. Nicole is also aware of the responsibilities attached to her title and is always ready to dirty her hands in planting trees, cleaning the beach and other activities to save our environment. "No pain, no gain," Nicole added. Also visiting Manila with Nicole were her runners-up Miss Air 2010 Victoria Shchukina of Russia and Miss Water 2010 Watsaporn Wattanakoon of Thailand. Shchukina, a finalist at the last Miss Earth pageant, was recently crowned as Miss Air 2010, after Ecuador’s Jennifer Pazmino decided to give up her title in order to wed her fiancé. A 23-year-old university graduate, Victoria was chosen over the other finalists to replace Pazmino because of her personal advocacy to save the forests in line with 2011 being the International Year of the Forests. The bubbly Watsaporn, 22, a TV anchor from Bangkok, expressed her excitement over the forthcoming Miss Earth pageant in her country. "This is a chance to give the pageant’s advocacies, which are global concerns, more mileage even as Thailand will also showcase its beautiful places, rich culture and hospitable people just like you Filipinos," said Watsaporn in fluent English. The Communication Arts graduate Chulalongkorn University was previously an exchange student in the US. The Miss Earth 2010 winners were joined at the presscon by the Miss Philippines-Earth 2011 winners namely Athena Inperial (Earth), Jonavi Quiray (Air), Muriel Orais (Water), Michelle Gavagan (Fire) and Tarhata Rico (Eco Tourism). The Miss Earth beauties took part at the opening games of the Philippine Ad Congress’ badminton tournament July 30. Last Monday, they paid a courtesy call at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, visited the SM Supermarket to promote its "I am Plastic-Free Campaign" and visited the Tayuman Elementary School in Rizal as part of the Miss Earth Foundation’s "I Love My Planet Earth School Tour." The ladies also sashayed on the runway in eco-friendly creations during a special fashion show at the Robot Bar in Makati City last Friday and at the Discovery Suites last Wednesday. The fierce and feisty ladies also devoted time for coastal clean-up and tree planting at the Las Piñas-Parañaque Critical Habitat and Eco-Tourism Area, and at an environmental forum at the De La Salle University. http://www.malaya.com.ph/aug05/ent3.html [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
