Subject: Airfield Falls Trailhead and Conservation Park opens

The much-anticipated Airfield Falls Trailhead and Conservation Park open to the public.

The trailhead, 200 Pumphrey Drive, features the McDonnell Douglas C-9, a military version of the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 airliner. After 37 years of service, the C-9A Nightingale was retired from Air Mobility Command. Its final active duty flight was in September 2005.

A shade pavilion marks the location of the former house of the Carswell base commander. While offering a picnic and resting place for park visitors, the new building preserves the memory of the residence by carefully incorporating some of the original garden walls, landscape steps and foundation patios into the new structure.

The new amenities represent the rich history of the region as it transformed from the Bomber Plant to Lockheed Martin to Carswell Air Force Base, to its current role as Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base.
