I have seen this question posted on many internet sites and have often wondered but came to the same conclusion that Bruce Lee did many years ago. It's to your advantage to be versed in many different styles for self defense.Royce Gracie is a masterful Jujitsu black belt and reigned in the UFC before the standup strikers learned to grapple to improved their overall game.Mr.Gracie was beaten up in a bar a few years ago by multiple attackers.Jujitsu and other grappling arts don't have much of an advantage if your facing 2 attackers as it seems Royce Gracie was. This is where having Boxing and or Karate skills are very useful for the striking game aka hitting and movement to keep attackers at bay.If your being threatened 1 on 1 ,most fights eventually end up on the ground and having the striking, standup game to go with a good grappling game with at least some basic wrestling skills can make you a very tough opponent for your basic street thug to chance.I workout at least 4 days a week jogging and lifting some weights.I've always loved boxing and have a wrestling background from high school.I've also studied some Karate, some Judo, and some Jujitsu and submission holds ie chocking, leg locking, and armlocking.I'm not gonna lie and tell you i'm a blackbelt in any catergory of training or fighting, but i feel confident enough to defend myself if i feel that i'm about to be attacked by someone in a real life situation with is what knowing self defense is all about and what Bruce Lee tried to teach us all who followed his career, blackbelts or novice!I watched a lot of Muhammad Ali years ago and copied his style which helped me in a fight i had in jr.high and today i watch a ton of WEC and UFC on cable.I don't like the idea of being backed into a corner, but it helps to avoid this by at least looking like you can defense yourself and staying away from places that are known to draw trouble.
