We got up to the driveway and found the gate eventually. The gate looked exactly the same as the photos in Bugliosi’s book, Helter Skelter. The angle of my car matched the angle of the front gate photo printed in the book exactly. We could see the corner of the garage and the light on the eave, all pictured in the book. I was surprised at how close the other houses on Cielo were. It’s difficult to believe none of the neighbors heard Steven Parent being shot especially since the caretaker William Garretson has since admitted he heard the gunshots from his residence at the guest house way in the back of the property. He claims he thought they were firecrackers tossed out of the car by Parent as he exited the property. Perhaps the neighbors mistook them for that too. We didn’t stay long and the cameras that had been added to the gate since the murders spooked us more than any ghosts from the past. We also visited the site of Spahn’s Movie ranch around the same time period. There was nothing left, the buildings there having all been burned down in a wildfire that swept thru the area in 1970. We did find some burned lumber in the tall grass, no doubt all that was left of the buildings the “Family” had once occupied. I still have a photo my wife took of me standing in the field that once home to Charlie Manson’s “Family.” Rocket used to work as a short order cook at a restaurant in nearby Canoga Park. He told me that a group of “hippies” used to come in with an old blind man and sit in a booth in the back. One of the girl hippies would come up to the counter and order for them all.
