I did not mean to come across as being critical of Joel; far from it. I am very proud of Joel. If I came across as being critical; then my apologies.

Yes, I concurred with Steve that Joel's "fear of the belt" was irrational. However, I don't think that is so much a criticism of Joel so much as I think Steve may have been trying to help Joel to see that. I think all teens at times have irrational fears of one kind of another and we adults at times get frustrated with teens because of this. Please don't take this as "criticism"; we DO understand.

Now, where do we go from here? What I suggest, Evan, is that you along with Joel, Sean, and Luke take Kyle to meet with Joel's dad. Given the way Kyle has been shooting his mouth off about his dad's paddling of Joel, the possibility exists that Joel's dad might hear something through the grapevine. YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO TAKE THAT CHANCE! It will be a lot easier if Joel's dad hears about this from you guys than if he hears it through the grapevine.

When you meet with Joel's dad, you need to tell him everything. Leave nothing out. You need to tell him about the comments and the dirty looks that Kyle and his dad have directed at Joel over the years and that Joel went to Kyle and his dad in good faith to resolve this man to man and that Kyle's dad's response was to give Joel a spanking and you also need to tell Joel's dad about the way Kyle has been carrying on since that time. Kyle needs to be at that meeting too because I am sure that Joel's dad will have some questions for him. I also wouldn't blame Joel's dad one bit if he wanted to return the favor and tan up Kyle's butt for the way he has treated Joel; and if Joel's dad wants to use his father's old razor strop on Kyle's butt, I wouldn't blame him there either. As far as that not being "fair", life isn't fair. I have no sympathy for bullies.
