Subject: The Challenge

Joel,

Saw your message regarding 'the challenge'. Yes dude, it is on. One situation with it has developed. Mom invited us for Sunday dinner last weekend & don't know about you dudes, but we two don't pass up mom's home cooking. Well while she was preparing, dad & us were chilling in the living room. The recent 'balloon boy' incident in Colorado came up & dad was saying how not only hoax was bad but parents asking kids to lie unacceptable. I used this conversation as an 'open door' & brought up Rick's & my deception over the cigarette when I was 11. Think my initiative shocked Rick from look on his face. Dad was cool about it. Said he only vaguely recalled. Laughed & ask both of us if there were other dark deceptions he needed now to know. All 3 had a big laugh over this and cold brews as we awaited dinner.

So see Joel, a guy can talk to his dad if it is something he knows he wants off his chest. Ya'll I'm 23 & it was many years ago so maybe safer than you talking 'cold turkey' now with your dad. I think you'll feel better Joel if you do & get the answer as to 'why' and who knows, maybe dad will say ok and tan your ass proper finally. Be it what you did last spring to get the detention that you traded for swats; the swats from coach for towel snapping; something on conscience that went unpunished w/o grounding that deserved an ass whuppin; or something that arises that gets you grounded now & you take the 'Luke route' and ask for the swatted butt instead, the challenge is on. Maybe ask Kyle to go with you for moral support or you and Kyle talk it over with his dad & let him back you with your dad since you say they are good friends.

Joel, I'll take the paddle out of retirement in my closet & Rick will bust my butt, even bare if that is how you report getting it, up to what your dad gives you. No backing out on my part; putting you on your honor that you truthfully got it. Now, little bro, I'm not encouraging you to go out and mess up deliberately & if you decide not to go forth or accept the challenge, that's ok too, I'll understand. You said it was something you wanted at least once & I'll put my butt on the line to motivate you to step up to your dad as you have already done with your principal, coach, grandpa and teammates to reach that goal.

Challenge on the table dude!!!
