Oldies Music. Com-

According to his grandson posting on Facebook, Billy Bland died March 22 in New York just before his 85th birthday. Billy, the youngest of 19 children, was born in Wilmington, South Carolina. He started out singing with the (Four) Bees in New York-- mostly notable recording "Toy Bell" (AKA "My Ding-A-Ling"-- later made popular by Chuck Berry). Leaving for a solo career in 1955, Billy worked with Titus Turner on the tune, "Let The Little Girl Dance" in 1960. His demo was released instead and became a #7 pop hit (#11 R&B-- his only appearance on that chart). While he charted four more times on the Hot 100, none of the tunes broke out of the top 90 and by 1965 he quit music, eventually opening a soul food restaurant in Harlem.
